Investigation
To start our investigation, we first did a keyword search. We did not find any such news anywhere. Yes, there was news that Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared April 2 as Hindu New Year’s Day in appreciation of the large Hindu community living in the state. But it was not a bill.
We spoke to Anita Joshi, associate director of the Hindu American Foundation, in this regard. She said, “The bill recognizing the Hindu New Year has not been passed in the US. In November 2021, a bill was introduced to make Diwali a national holiday, but that bill is still in committee, so it was neither passed nor rejected. Apart from this, there is no bill regarding Hindu festivals or recognition.”
Finally, we did social scanning of the profile of the page भाजपा कार्यालय, a Facebook user who made the fake post viral. This page has more than 500 followers.
Conclusion: In the investigation of Vishvas team, this post turned out to be fake. No bill to recognize Hindu New Year has been passed in America.
