New Delhi (Vishvas News): Vishvas News received a post on its Whatsapp Chatbot for fact checking. The post claims that Tezpur Litchi gets a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2020. Vishvas News had earlier investigated the post and found it to be misleading. Tezpur Litchi got the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2015.
Claim
The post received by Vishvas News on its Whatsapp Chatbot reads: Tezpur Litchi has recently bagged the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2020.
Investigation
Vishvas News earlier investigated by performing a Google search using the keywords “Tezpur Litchi GI Tag” and found a tweet from the official Twitter account of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA). As per the tweet, “#Tezpur #Litchi of #Assam have got the geographical indication (GI) tags, making this item an incontrovertible proof of their origins in the state, and protecting them from production elsewhere.”
There was no mention of a specific date or time of the Tezpur Litchi’s GI tag.
Vishvas News also spoke to Dr. Prasanna Kr. Pathak, Director of Extension Education, Assam Agricultural University and he confirmed that Tezpur Litchis got GI tag in 2015.
