GlobalFact11: Fact-Checkers Worldwide Reaffirm Commitment To Free Speech And Accurate Information

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina (Vishvas News): At the 11th annual Global Fact meeting, 127 fact-checking organisations from 80 countries convened to issue the ‘Sarajevo Statement,’ emphasising their commitment to freedom of expression and access to information.

The statement highlights the importance of fact-checking in upholding democratic values and combating misinformation. Despite increasing attacks and accusations of censorship, the Sarajevo Statement asserts that fact-checkers work is essential for providing accurate information to the public. The key difference between censorship and fact-checking is that censorship removes false information, whereas fact-checking provides accurate information by debunking myths and exposing fake news.

The statement underscores that fact-checking does not aim to remove false claims but to provide context and evidence, enabling informed public debate. In the age of artificial intelligence, the need for accurate information is more crucial than ever.

The GlobalFact11 conference, the world’s largest gathering of fact-checkers, also featured discussions on legislative efforts to counter disinformation, as highlighted by the European Union’s approach.

The statement, coordinated by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the Poynter Institute, is supported by 130 fact-checking organisations across 80 countries, such as Vishvas News, FactCrescendo, India Today Fact Check, News Checker, BOOM, and others. These organisations are all signatories to the IFCN Code of Principles, which affirms high standards for accuracy, non-partisanship, and transparency in fact-checking journalism.

Debates have been ongoing on media hosting speech, tech platforms moderating public posts, and handling harmful speech. False claims should not be removed solely because they cause harm but should be provided with relevant context and verification. False claims should not be rewarded with popularity or virality. With the rise of AI tools, the need for accuracy is growing. The public needs accurate information for decision-making in government, economy, health, and other aspects of life. Fact-checking is crucial for providing precise information and improving information ecosystems.
