Fact Check: Viral Video Purportedly Showing Rohit Sharma And MS Dhoni Talking On A Video Call Is Edited

Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the viral video of Rohit Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni was edited.

New Delhi Vishvas News – In the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final match, where India defeated South Africa and became the world champion, a video went viral on social media, showing Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma talking on a video call. It is being claimed that Dhoni congratulated Rohit Sharma through a video call after winning the match.

In its investigation, Vishvas News discovered the video to be misleading. The viral video was created by combining two different videos. Rohit Sharma’s video dates back to 2020, when he had a conversation with David Warner on Instagram Live. Meanwhile, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s video dates back to 2023, when he sent birthday wishes to the daughter of the CEO of Chennai Super Kings (CSK). These two videos have been combined and made viral by combining them.

What Is In The Viral Post?

On July 1, 2024, Facebook user Facts bhai (archive link ) shared the viral video with the caption, “Dhoni congratulates Rohit Sharma for the World Cup.” Another Facebook user Sagar Suryvanshi also shared the video (archive link ) on the same day and captioned, “Mahendra Singh Dhoni did such a thing on video calling from Rohit Sharma that Rohit Sharma became emotional, watch the video after that #worldcup2024 #viralvideochallenge #rohitsharma45 #followforfollowback #viratkohli”

Investigation:

To validate the authenticity of the viral video, we decided to investigate both videos separately.

First video

We searched the screenshot of Rohit Sharma’s video using Google Images. We found the video on the official YouTube channel of Mumbai Indians. The video was uploaded on May 8, 2020. According to the information mentioned, the video is of Rohit Sharma and David Warner.

The video between Rohit Sharma and David Warner’s video call can also be seen on Warner’s verified Instagram account, shared on May 8, 2020.

Second video

Moving ahead with our investigation, we searched for Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s video and found related news on the website of Sports Keeda. In the news published on October 22, 2023, it was mentioned that Dhoni wished the daughter of Chennai Super Kings’ CEO Kashi Vishwanathan a happy birthday.

We found news related to the viral video on other news websites also.

According to a news published on Dainik Jagran’s website on June 30, 2024, Dhoni congratulated the Indian team by sharing their photo on his official Instagram handle. The caption reads, “My heart was racing. Well done for keeping calm, believing in yourself, and for what you did. Thank you on behalf of the Indians at home and the people around the world for bringing the World Cup home. Best wishes. Hey, thank you for the valuable birthday gift.”

We reached out to Dainik Jagran’s sports editor Abhishek Tripathi regarding the video and he confirmed that the video is edited and both these videos are different.

Finally, we scanned the profile of the user who shared the video and found that the user mostly shares cricket-related posts.

Conclusion: Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the viral video of Rohit Sharma and Mahendra Singh Dhoni was edited.
