The claim that all private Indian news channels are banned in Nepal except DD News is misleading. While such a ban was imposed for a limited time in 2020, it was subsequently lifted. The circulating post is sharing old news with a misleading claim, leading to confusion among social media users.
New Delhi Vishvas News – Social media users are sharing a post claiming that Nepal has banned all Indian news channels except Doordarshan. However, after an investigation by Vishvas News, this claim has been found to be misleading.
In the year 2020, Nepal indeed banned Indian news channels for a few days due to the broadcast of “objectionable” information about then Prime Minister KP Oli. Nevertheless, this ban was later lifted, and currently, there is no ban on Indian news channels in Nepal.
The viral post was shared by a user named ‘Bhashan Ya Rashan,’ (Archive) with the caption, “Nepal bans DD News. Banned all Indian channels except… Nepal was troubled by the injury of Dankapati’s sting.” Many other users on different social media platforms have shared the same image with identical or similar claims.
During a news search related to the banning of Indian private news channels in Nepal, several reports mentioning the ban were found. However, all of these reports are old. One such report by Al-Jazeera on July 10, 2020, mentioned that Nepal’s cable and satellite providers had banned Indian news channels following public complaints about airing “objectionable” content about Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The ban occurred a day after Zee News aired a report claiming Oli’s close ties with the Chinese ambassador to Nepal. Other news channels also reported on this ban, including India’s English news channel ‘Vion.’
However, it is essential to note that this ban was lifted after some time. On August 2, 2020, News agency ANI shared a statement by Sudeep Acharch, Managing Director of Dish Home, Nepal, informing about the resumption of telecast of all Indian news channels, including Zee News, Aaj Tak, India TV, and ABP News, which were banned earlier.
For additional confirmation, Vishvas News contacted Ghanshyam Khadka, a journalist with Nepal’s newspaper Kantipur Samachar, who confirmed that there is currently no ban on any Indian news channel in Nepal. He clarified that the ban had been imposed as a response to objectionable news about KP Oli and the Chinese Ambassador, but it was later lifted.
Conclusion: The claim that all private Indian news channels are banned in Nepal except DD News is misleading. While such a ban was imposed for a limited time in 2020, it was subsequently lifted. The circulating post is sharing old news with a misleading claim, leading to confusion among social media users.
