Fact Check: Viral Picture of ‘Duck Orchid’ is AI-Generated

New Delhi (Vishvas News) – A viral image circulating on social media depicts an orchid flower resembling a duck. The accompanying claim suggests that it is a “duck orchid”.
Vishvas News investigated and found the claim to be misleading. The image in question is generated using Artificial Intelligence or AI technology. While a flower known as the ‘duck orchid’ does exist, it does not resemble the image being circulated.
What’s in the viral post
The viral image was posted by a Facebook page ‘Happy Gardens’. The caption reads, “This is a flying duck orchid! Nature is crazy!!”
Investigation
Upon conducting a reverse image search using Google Lens, we discovered that the picture is available on the photo agency website Shutterstock. It is categorised as a “vector image”, which implies that it was created using computer graphics or specific AI tools.
To further analyse the authenticity of the image, we uploaded it to the AI detector website huggingface.co, which indicated a 98% likelihood of the picture being AI-generated. The AI detector website aiornot.com also classified the image as AI-generated.
Additionally, we investigated whether a flower called the duck orchid exists. We found that the Large Duck Orchid (scientific name Calliana major) is indeed a genuine wild orchid, primarily found in Australia. However, it does not resemble the viral image.
To further verify the authenticity of the viral image, we consulted R Geetha, a retired Botany professor from Delhi University. According to her, “The Calliana Major or Duck Orchid does bear some resemblance to a duck, but it does not resemble the viral image in any way. Specifically, the eyes depicted in the viral image are entirely fabricated. To the best of my knowledge, there are no flowers with prominent bulging eyes like those seen in the image. If you encounter such eyes on a flower, it is highly likely that the image is fake.”
As for the page that initially shared the post, we discovered that the “Happy Gardens” page has more than 5.6 lakh followers.
Conclusion: The viral picture of the “duck orchid” is AI-generated and does not depict the real duck orchid flower.
