New Delhi (Vishvas News): A post related to India’s first prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru is going viral on the internet. In the picture, a man, portrayed as Pandit Nehru, can be seen standing close to a woman holding her face. People are sharing the photo with false claims in an attempt to defame Jawahar Lal Nehru.

Vishvas News fact-checked the viral post and found that the picture is of English actor Silas Carson. The picture was taken from his famous play “Drawing The Line”, which was based on Jawahar Lal Nehru.

What’s the viral post?

The Facebook page ‘Bharat Bachao Andolan‘ (archive link) posted a picture on March 13 with the caption, “My dear uncle trying to slit the throat of an English woman during the freedom struggle.”

Vishvas News Investigation:

Vishvas News first used Google reverse image tool to verify the authenticity of the viral post. In reverse image results, the original picture was found on the website of Metro.com.uk. This image was used in a news story published on December 11, 2013. The caption of the image mentioned the names of Silas Carson and Lucy Black, referring to the play ‘Drawing the Line’, which was a drama based on the partition of India.

Taking the investigation further, we searched Hampstead Theatre, where the play was performed. On searching for ‘Drawing the Line’ on the website of this theatre, we came to know that this play was performed from December 3, 2013, to January 11, 2014, at the famous Hampstead Theater in London. We found the original picture in its gallery.

Drawing the Line is a play set against the backdrop of the India-Pakistan partition. In this, an attempt has been made to shed light on the relationship between Lord Mountbatten, his wife Lady Mountbatten and Jawaharlal Nehru. Silas Carson played Nehru and Lucy Black played Edwina in the play. Earlier, Vishvas News debunked similar information in this report.

Vishvas News also contacted the National Coordinator of Social Media, Congress, Nitin Agarwal and shared the viral picture with him. He said, “Nehru has always been on the target of the troll army. Such pictures are used to defame the first PM of the country. This is a picture of a scene from a British drama.”

At the end of the investigation, the Facebook page named Bharat Bachao Andolan was investigated and it was found that more than 3 lakh people follow this page.

Conclusion: The viral post about India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru is fake. The picture was clicked from a British drama titled ‘Drawing the Line’.
