Fact Check: Viral Claim About Mallikarjun Kharge Possessing Assets Worth Rs 50,000 Crore is FAKE

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A post that has gone viral on social media ahead of the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections in 2024 claims that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge possesses immense wealth totaling Rs 50,000 crore, which purportedly includes several expensive commercial properties.

Vishvas News conducted an investigation and found this claim to be false and a misinformation campaign against Mallikarjun Kharge. Kharge was elected to the Rajya Sabha in June 2020, and according to the affidavit filed during that period, his total assets (including movable and immovable assets) amount to around Rs 20 crore. Additionally, he has liabilities exceeding Rs 23 lakh.

A social media user shared the viral post (archive link) claiming that Mallikarjun Kharge’s total wealth is around Rs 50,000 crore.

Many other social media users have also shared similar claims.

Investigation

According to information available on the website myneta.info, Mallikarjun Kharge’s total assets (including movable and immovable assets) amount to more than Rs 20 crore, with total liabilities exceeding Rs 23 lakh.

In terms of movable assets, Kharge has a total of Rs 2,82,20,806, while his wife possesses movable assets totaling more than Rs 81 lakh, and his dependent (Dependent 1) has assets exceeding Rs 16 lakh. Combined, their total movable assets amount to Rs 3,79,75,654 (approximately Rs 4 crore).

According to information available on the official website of Parliament.in, Mallikarjun Kharge was elected to the Rajya Sabha in June 2020, and is required to submit an affidavit before the election, which includes details of his assets. Kharge’s election affidavit confirms his net worth figures.

Movable assets include cash, deposits with banks and non-banking institutions, bonds, debentures, shares of companies, NSS, postal savings, LIC, and other insurance (not included in net worth), motor vehicles, jewelry, and other valuable assets.

Kharge’s total immovable property is valued at more than Rs 16 crore, including his own property worth more than Rs 7 crore, his wife’s property valued at more than Rs 8 crore, and the property of Dependent 1 valued at more than Rs 83 lakh. Immovable property includes agricultural land, non-agricultural land, buildings, houses, and others.

Our investigation concludes that Mallikarjun Kharge’s total wealth (as per the affidavit dated June 6, 2020) is more than Rs 20 crore. Therefore, the claim that his net worth exceeds Rs 50,000 crore is false and is an election propaganda against him.

We contacted Uttar Pradesh spokesperson Abhimanyu Tyagi regarding the viral claim. He described it as election propaganda and stated that the asset data is available on the Election Commission’s website for anyone to verify.

The user who shared the viral claim is followed by approximately 2,000 people on Instagram.
