Investigation
Vishvas News started its investigation using the InVid tool. We extracted the screenshots of the video and performed Google reverse image search of the screengrabs.
We found a full-length video uploaded by Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal on its Youtube channel on January 15, 2021. In the video, Delhi CM was being interviewed by the channel’s editor Dilip Tiwari and his colleague Jagdeep Sandhu.
Several cropped clips of video were used to make an edited 18-second clip from the recent Arvind Kejriwal interview and it was potrayed that the CM was speaking in support of the farm laws.
In the interview, Delhi CM explains with the help of examples made by Union ministers as well as the central government supporting the farm bills. The video clip that has gone viral shows this part.
In the same interview, Kejriwal counters the arguments made in favour of the bills. This portion has been edited out in the video. In the original, from the 6 minutes timestamp, the CM can be heard saying, “The central government and BJP has put out all their big leaders on the ground to make people understand that the bill is pro-farmers. I have heard all the speeches, what do they say in their speech.” Soon after this part, the CM can be heard saying: “With the bill your land won’t go away, there is no advantage that was there only, your MSP won’t go.” This has been included in the viral clip. However, the following part in which he criticizes has been removed while editing. He further said: “there is no advantage that was there only, your Mandi (market) won’t go away there is no advantage that was there only, what is the advantage their leaders can’t explain only.”
At the end of the viral clip, Kejriwal can be heard saying that it would be a revolutionary step in the agricultural sector. Here, the CM was referring to farmers demands on bringing an MSP law based on recommendations by the Swaminathan Commission.
As seen in the original interview, at 9.48 minutes, Kejriwal can be heard supporting the farmers’ protest. He said: “I have hope from this farmers’ protests, Firstly these three farmers bills should be taken back. And second, they are demanding for a law for a guarantee of MSP should be brought. According to MSP Swaminathan Commission, MSP should be calculated by adding 50% of the cost according to the 50% profit. If it comes. Dilip ji, this will be the biggest revolutionary step in agriculture within 70 years.” However, this part was cropped and the statement was presented in a misleading manner.
Many users shared the edited video on social media. The edited clip was also shared by BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra on Twitter. His tweet was labeled as manipulated by Twitter.
Vishvas News contacted the political editor of Dainik Jagran VK Shukla. According to his conversation with the spokesperson of AAP, Saurabh Bharadwaj the viral video is edited and fake.
