Fact Check: Video Of Cow Attacking A Schoolgirl Is From Chennai, Not Faridabad

The viral video of a girl returning home from school being attacked by a cow is from Chennai. The video has nothing to do with Faridabad, Haryana. Some people are sharing the video from Chennai with the misleading claim that the footage is from Faridabad.

New Delhi Vishvas News – A video of a cow attacking a schoolgirl walking on the road is going viral on social media. The footage shows that the cow lifted and struck the girl with its horns. It is being claimed that the video is from Faridabad.

In its investigation, Vishvas News found that the viral video on social media is not from Faridabad, but rather from Chennai’s MMDA Colony. In this video, a 9-year-old girl who was on her way back from school with her mother and brother faced an unexpected cow attack. The video is being shared with a false claim.

What is viral post?

Facebook user Narendra Kumar (archive link) shared the video on August 11, saying, “When will the Haryana government take action against the Animal Husbandry Department? Such incidents happen every day. In Faridabad, a cow attacked a girl, leaving her seriously injured.”

Several users on Facebook shared the video with the same claim.

Investigation

To investigate the viral video, we searched Google with the keywords (cow girl attack). During the search, we found news reports published on several news websites related to the viral video. However, the video was not from Faridabad, but from Chennai. A news report related to the viral video was published on Dainik Jagran on August 10, 2023. The report said, “A heart-wrenching incident has come to light in Chennai, where a cow attacked a girl while she was returning home from school with her mother and brother. The cow’s attack caused serious injuries to the schoolgirl’s head, and she was admitted to a nearby hospital.” The news report related to the viral video can also be read on Jagran English.

The report from the viral video can also be watched on the verified YouTube channel of ‘News7 Tamil Prime‘. According to the description, the video is from Chennai.

On August 11, 2023, News18 reported that the owner of the cow, a 26-year-old man, was arrested after a complaint by the girl’s mother. He was charged with neglecting the animal and allowing it to roam freely. Chief Secretary/Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner, J Radhakrishnan, met the girl at a private hospital and inquired about her injuries and the treatment she had received. Radhakrishnan called the incident “very unfortunate” and told reporters that a fine of Rs 25,000 has been imposed on the cattle owner. The cow that attacked the child was taken to a cattle shed in Perambur by corporation workers.

The news related to the viral incident can be found on many other news websites. For more information, we contacted local Chennai journalist Suresh Murthy. He said, “This incident happened a few days ago in Chennai. Appropriate action is being taken. The girl is doing well now, and her treatment is ongoing.”

At the end of the investigation, we scanned the profile of Facebook user ‘Narendra Kumar’ who shared the video with the false claim. According to the information on the profile, the user is a resident of Delhi and has around six thousand followers.
