Fact Check: This viral circular from SRM university is fake

New Delhi (Vishvas News). In a bizarre post, a viral circular allegedly from the SRM University registrar makes it mandatory for every female student of SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) KTR campus to have a boyfriend for security purposes. 

Vishvas News investigation revealed the claim is fake. SRM University Registrar refuted the claims of sharing any such circular. 

Claim

A viral circular allegedly from the letterhead of SRM University Registrar makes it mandatory for each and every female student of SRMIST KTR campus to have a boyfriend for security purposes. It further warns that single students will not be allowed to enter into premises. It also alleges to produce a recent picture with their boyfriend at the entry into the campus. The circular with SRM university logo, Registrar’s seal and signature has been marked to all other senior officials in the college. The archived version of the post can be seen here. 

Investigation

We searched on the Internet for news with keywords (SRM university new notification, female students). We found an article stating, “The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) in Kattankulathur has filed a complaint with the police in Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram and Chennai regarding a circular that has gone viral. The circular said it was mandatory for all girl students to have a boyfriend on campus for security purposes.”

Vishvas News contacted SRM University Registrar N Sethuraman via email for verification. We received an official reply saying, “The viral circular is fake. A complaint has been lodged with the police.” The article also quotes him clarifying this was not the first time that a circular had been misused. 

Social scanning of the user Kannigaa who shared the viral claim revealed that the profile has 4,666 followers on Twitter and is active since February 2019.
