Fact Check: This Video Doesn’t Show Wife of Martyr Captain Anshuman Singh

New Delhi (Vishvas News) – Social media platforms are buzzing with a video of a woman dancing. Sharing this video, users are claiming that this woman is the widow of martyred Captain Anshuman Singh.
Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found that the woman in the video is actually a model named Reshma Sebastian.
What’s Going Viral?
On July 12, Facebook user Rupesh Kumar shared this post. He wrote, “A mom lost her son to the country, and now the dead soldier’s wife shows off her beauty on Instagram with a million followers and a Shaurya Chakra.”
Investigation
To verify this, we searched the screenshots from the viral video on Google’s reverse image. This led us to the original video. A model and social media influencer Reshma Sebastian uploaded it on her Instagram profile on April 24, 2024.
While scanning the profile of Reshma Sebastian we found that she had put a YouTube video link in her profile bio. This link was from a TEDx Talks video where Reshma was featured. The description says: “Reshma Sebastian is a well-known model with a huge fan base. After 11 years and a baby, she proves that embracing motherhood is not a barrier to our dreams or career. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. .”
We also found a post on Reshma’s Instagram profile from July 14. It said, “This is not Smriti Singh’s (widow of Indian Army soldier Capt Anshuman Singh) page/ig account. Read the profile details and bio first. Please refrain from spreading false information and hate comments.”
We found that Reshma Sebastian is a model based in Kochi. To check this, we talked to Prashant MS, a journalist from Kerala. He confirmed that the woman in the video is Reshma Sebastian, a social media influencer and model.
Background on Captain Anshuman Singh controversy
Captain Anshuman Singh received the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime bravery award, posthumously. His wife, Smriti Singh, received the award at a ceremony on July 5, 2024. After this, Captain Anshuman Singh’s family made some remarks that caused controversy. His parents said they want changes to the Indian Army’s ‘Next of Kin’ (NOK) rules. These rules decide how money goes to families when a soldier dies. More details on this can be read in the news reports here and here.
In the end, we looked into the account of the person who put up the post with the wrong information. We found out that user Rupesh Kumar lives in Haryana and has over 16,000 people following him on Facebook.
