Fact Check: This is not video of a PUBG addicted boy, viral claim is false

The video being widely circulated on internet claiming to be that of a PUBG addicted boy is false. The boy in the video suffered from malingering.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): Vishvas News came across a video of a boy being circulated on various social media platforms. In the video a boy could be seen moving his hands staring blankly in the space, it is being claimed that the condition of boy is such because of addiction to the PUBG game. Vishvas News in its investigation found the claim to be fake.

Claim:

Facebook user পংকজ পাঠক posted a video on April 10 and wrote in Bengali: PUBg ক খেলা এটা শিশুৰ কি হল চাওঁক । ।।। আজিয়েই শিশুক মোবাইল দিয়া বন্ধ কৰক , নহলে আপুনিও এনেকুৱা দিন দেখিবলৈ পাব ।।

Translation: See what happened to the boy playing PUBG. … Stop giving mobile phones to children today, otherwise you will have to see such days in future

Investigation:

Vishvas News started its investigation by uploading the video in InVid tool and then taking the keyframes.

We ran a Google Reverse Image search on the screengrabs.

Vishvas News found an article on ETVBharat, published on April 8, 2022. The article in Telugu was titled: Addicted to ‘Free Fire’ .. the analogy is the same disturbance .. firing a gun in the gall …

We also found an article on the website of Times of India.

The article was titled: Video of boy not ‘PUBG addiction’, say doctors
The article was published on April 8, 2022.

The article said, “While many claimed it was due to PUBG addiction, doctors denied it saying it was a case of malingering wherein the patient may have intentionally pretended to act in that manner.”

The story also had a clarification from deam of Tirunelveli MCH, Dr M Ravichandran where the boy was admitted.

In the next step of investigation, we contacted P Sudhakar, a senior journalist from The Hindu. He informed that this case happened a week ago. “The boy was initially admitted to Tirunelveli MCH, the parents unhappy with the diagnosis then shifted him to a private hospital. The doctors had clearly stated that this was not a case of PUBG addiction but that of malingering or a hysterical convulsion reaction.”

In the last step of investigation Vishvas News did a social background check of the Facebook user, পংকজ পাঠক (Acharya Pankaj Pathak) is a managing director at Sanjeevani Herbs, Gauhati.

Conclusion: The video being widely circulated on internet claiming to be that of a PUBG addicted boy is false. The boy in the video suffered from malingering.
