Fact Check: This girl reunited with her family hours after she was lost, 2016 picture viral with the false claim

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A picture is going viral on social media in which a crying little girl can be seen with a lady railway police employee. In the post, users are appealing that ‘this girl is separated from her loved ones, help her to be reunited with her family.’ Vishvas team found in their investigation that This claim is false. The picture is actually from 2016 and the girl was found lost on the Nagpur Railway platform. Soon, her picture went viral on Facebook and was shared extensively on WhatsApp. Within 20 minutes of the picture going viral, officials were able to trace the girl’s mother and relatives, and it was handed over to her family.

What’s in the viral post

We found this claim on our chatbot number +91 95992 99372. On searching, we found that the claim is also quite viral on Facebook. The post with the picture reads “This daughter has been found in Bareilly on the train coming from Mumbai. Her name is Sonal Pate. Plz share further whoever has it. Pray too. Do good. Maybe you will help her reunite with her family.”

Investigation

To check the viral claim, we searched this picture on Google reverse image. We found this picture in a 2016 new report of indianexpress.com. According to the news “a photo of four-year-old Avani Jain with a Railway Police official stating how she had got lost at the Nagpur railway platform was shared by railways on WhatsApp and Facebook within minutes of the girl getting lost. The photo showed the girl holding a lady railway police officer’s hand. Soon, the photo was shared by one of the officials and it spread to nearly 200 WhatsApp groups within minutes. In 20 minutes of the picture going viral, the girl, who was traveling with her mother and family from Nagpur to Bhopal, with the help of the railway police, was reunited with her mother Sunaina Jain and relatives.”

We spoke to ANI’s Nagpur correspondent Saurabh Joshi about this. “This photo is from 2016. The girl was traveling from Nagpur to Bhopal with her family. After she went missing, the police traced her and reunited her with her family,” he said.

Finally, Vishvas News did a social scanning of the user Gajan Far who shared the post on Facebook. The user is a resident of Delhi.
