Vishvas News (Guwahati): A post is viral on social media where is it being claimed that a Muslim youth was attacked by a group of people in Tinsukia district of Assam on June 12 for cow theft. Vishvas news investigation found the claim to be misleading. The person who died in the incident actually belonged Hindu community. The man’s name was Sharat Maran. There was no cow theft involved. Police and journalists denied any communal angle in the incident.

The viral post is claiming that a Muslim youth was attacked by a group of people in Tinsukia district of Assam on June 12 for cow theft.

Investigation
Vishvas News first searched on Google with specific keywords in English and Assamese to verify this viral post. We saw a plenty of reports regarding this incident. According to the reports, the incident took place on June 12, 2021, in the Karjanga area under the Baghjan police station near Dumduma in the Tinsukia district of Assam. The 34-year-old victim’s name was Sharat Maran, and he was from Kardaiguri village. No report mentioned any communal spin in the incident.
We contacted Senior Journalist and News Agency ANI’s Upper Assam correspondent Surajit Gogoi regarding this. He told us, “The man who died in this incident was a Hindu and youth from the Maran community. He was also not a cow thief as mentioned in various posts. The man was addicted to the drugs and sold all his belongings due to financial distress because of the lockdown. He entered the house of an Adibasi family in Karjanga village at around 2AM that night and was caught for burglary. The youth was later critically injured in an attack by locals. The incident had no communal angle.”
