Fact Check: The woman in this video is not District Commissioner of Kodagu, viral post is misleading

The viral post is misleading. The woman felicitated in the video is not Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy. Naziya Begum, an associate in SafeShop online marketing platform is being felicitated for her success.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video of a woman being felicitated is shared on social media with a claim that people congratulate Annies Kanmani Joy, the District Commissioner of Kodagu and a former nurse in Trivandrum. The post hails Joy for her nursing experience hoping to help Kodagu district to come out of covid.

Vishvas News investigation revealed the claim is misleading. The woman in the video is not Annies Kanmani Joy, the nurse who qualified for IAS in 2012 and the current Deputy Commisioner of Kodagu district. The person featured in the video is Naziya Begum, an associate of an online marketing platform.

Facebook user Purushotham Thirthahalli posted a video of a woman being felicitated with description reading, “Annies Kanmani Joy was a nurse in Trivandrum Medical College. She completed IAS and posted as Disrict Commissioner in Kodagu. Because of her nursing experience, she could help Kodagu District to totally come out of Covid. She is getting a special treat from the people of Kodagu.” The archived version of the post can be seen here.

Investigation

While we searched on the Internet for news about Annies Kanmani Joy, government website identified her as the Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu, Karnataka.

An article in Shethepeople woman’s channel stated, “IAS Annies Kanmani Joy leads Covid fight in Karnataka’s Kodagu.”

An article by the Jagran Josh states, “Annies, who hails from a farming family, passed the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 2011 after two years of hard work and achieved 65th rank… Joy had completed her BSc Nursing in Trivandrum Government Medical College.”

Vishvas News contacted Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmony Joy for further confirmation. Sharing to us an article published by The News Minute, Joy clarified to us she is not the woman in the viral video.

While we could confirm the information about Annies shared in the viral post, we decided to verify the video. We first uploaded the viral video to the InVID tool and extracted keyframes. We searched them on the Internet using Google reverse image search tool.

We found this video uploaded by YouTube user MD Adil Fayaz on 19 February.

While searching for his profile details on Youtube, we found another video identifying the woman in the viral video to be Naziya Begum from Safeshop.

We also found many other videos on Google about her success story with SafeShop, an online marketing platform. An official in the company, who didn’t wish to be named, confirmed to us that the woman in the video is Naziya Begum, an associate with their firm.

Social scanning of the Facebook user who shared the viral video revealed that he lives in Bengaluru and has 4,913 friends on Facebook.

Conclusion: The viral post is misleading. The woman felicitated in the video is not Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy. Naziya Begum, an associate in SafeShop online marketing platform is being felicitated for her success.
