Fact Check: Tej Pratap Yadav has not received a Ph.D. degree, old photo of a convocation ceremony is viral with a false claim

This claim turned out to be false in the investigation of Vishvas News. The picture going viral is actually from the time when Tej Pratap Yadav used to be the health minister of Bihar and conferred degrees to the students at the convocation ceremony of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A photo of Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son Tej Pratap Yadav is going viral on social media, in which it is being claimed that the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader, who did not even pass the tenth examination, Tej Pratap has recived a Ph.D. degree from Takshika University. This claim turned out to be false in the investigation of Vishvas News. The viral picture is actually from the time when Tej Pratap Yadav was the health minister of Bihar and conferred degrees to the students at the convocation ceremony of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences.

What’s in the viral post?

Vishvas News got this claim on its tipline chatbot number +91 95992 99372. Along with it was written, “I am extremely Happy & Delighted. to inform you that Mr. Tej Pratap. Yadav (10 fail) son of Lalu Prasad. Yadav received the Doctorate degree from Takshsila University, Bihar. It is a matter of Great Pride for all Indians. Congrats to Dr. Tej Prasad Yadav. It happens only in India… Jai ho….”

Investigation

To check this post, we did a Google reverse image search of this picture. We found this picture from another angle on the verified Twitter handle of Tej Pratap Yadav. This tweet dated 11 February 2017 reads, ‘Translated: Today attended the 3rd convocation of IGIMS and gave degree certificates and gold medals to all the passed out students.’

In a news search, we found a February 2017 report on the website of ‘Times of India’ according to which, ’78 MBBS students, 20 post-graduate students, and three super specialty course students attended the convocation held on the premises of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences on Saturday. And students of 20 paramedics were awarded degrees at the hands of Health Minister Tej Pratap Yadav.”

In search, we also found a video of IGIMS convocation program held in 2017. It is clear from here that this photo is from when Tej Pratap Yadav was distributing certificates to the students.

Dainik Jagran’s Patna Health Reporter Pawan Mishra also confirmed these pictures to be of IGIMS convocation, which was attended by Tej Pratap Yadav as Health Minister.

According to Myneta.info, a data depository platform run by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), Tej Pratap Yadav is a Class XII pass.

The user, who shared the viral picture with a false claim, has described himself as a resident of Delhi in his profile.
