Fact Check: Rahul Gandhi did not delete tweets on Savarkar after threat of lawsuit; viral claim false

The claim that Rahul Gandhi deleted his tweet on VD Savarkar from his timeline after getting an FIR threat from Ranjit Savarkar is false and a political propaganda. His tweet, where he has termed Savarkar as ‘Mafivir’, can still be seen on his Twitter timeline.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A viral video on social media has been claiming that Rahul Gandhi deleted his tweets on Savarkar after his grandson Ranjit Savarkar threatened to file an FIR against the Congress leader. Vishvas News in its investigation found that Rahul Gandhi did not delete any posts on Savarkar. The claim shared in the social media post was false and misleading. In fact, there are several tweets on Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter handle in which he has been speaking on Savarkar.

Claim:

Social media user ‘Vikas Chopra’ shared the viral post (archive link) with the caption, “After Savarkar ji’s grandson threatened to file an FIR against Rahul Gandhi for his derogatory and baseless statements against Veer Savarkar ji, Rahul Gandhi has deleted all his tweets on Veer Savarkar. Today, after getting an FIR threat, everything was deleted.”

Several other social media users have shared it with similar claims.

Investigation:

During the investigation, we found a March 28 report by Dainik Jagran where Savarkar’s grandson was quoted as saying that a case will be filed against Rahul Gandhi for commenting on Veer Savarkar. According to the report, Ranjit Savarkar, in a conversation with ANI, said, “If Rahul Gandhi does not apologise for his statement on Savarkar, he will file an FIR against him. He said this is not the first time Rahul has insulted Savarkar, he has insulted him before as well.”

The statement from Ranjit came after Rahul Gandhi made a remark against Savarkar. In a press conference held on March 25, the Congress leader was asked whether he would apologise for the statement that led to his disqualification from Parliament, Gandhi in response had said, “My name is Gandhi, not Savarkar. Gandhi does not apologise to anyone.”

According to the archive of Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter timeline, till March 25, 2023, his total number of tweets was 6,782 and as of April 6, the number of his tweets is 6,795. If any tweets had been removed, the number would be low but till now the number of tweets made from his Twitter account has only increased.

According to data from the Social Blade website, 10 tweets were posted from Gandhi’s Twitter profile between March 23 and March 29. These tweets can also be seen on his social media timeline.

There is a tweet dated March 15, 2022, on Rahul Gandhi’s Twitter timeline, in which a video has been posted. The thumbnail of the video has a picture of Birsa Munda vs Savarkar with ‘Asli Veer vs Mafi Veer’.

It is clear that Rahul Gandhi did not delete any tweet from his Twitter timeline after Savarkar’s grandson’s warning. We contacted Uttar Pradesh Congress spokesperson Abhimanyu Tyagi regarding the viral claim. He said that this is an attempt of political propaganda against Rahul Gandhi.

The user who shared the viral picture with the false claim is followed by 2.5 lakh people on Facebook.

Conclusion: The claim that Rahul Gandhi deleted his tweet on VD Savarkar from his timeline after getting an FIR threat from Ranjit Savarkar is false and a political propaganda. His tweet, where he has termed Savarkar as ‘Mafivir’, can still be seen on his Twitter timeline.
