Fact Check: Picture of Man Carrying A Corpse on a Rickshaw From 2017 Passed off as Recent

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A picture is going viral on social media in which a man can be carrying a body wrapped in a cloth on a rickshaw. This picture is going viral as recent. Vishvas News investigated and found the post to be misleading. The viral picture is from 2017.

As per the 2017 report published in magazine.com, this picture is from Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Claim

On May 7, 2021, a Twitter user MANJUL @MANJULtoons uploaded a photo with a claim that read, “This is new India ..” The picture is going viral during the coronavirus pandemic.

Investigation

Vishvas News used Google reverse image search tool to investigate the post. When we uploaded the viral picture and searched it, we found the original image on patrika.com in a report dated September 1, 2017. As per the report, “The incident is from Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh, where a newly married woman committed suicide by hanging herself in Gurdha village of Maudha police station on Thursday evening. The local police kept the dead body in the district hospital. Even after waiting for a long time in the morning, when the vehicle that carries the dead body was not made available by the district hospital, the family was forced to carry the dead body of the woman in a rickshaw to the post-mortem house from the district hospital. ”

A YouTube video is also embedded with the report, in which a person sitting with a corpse on a rickshaw can be seen in the viral picture. In a video uploaded on the verified YouTube channel of Patrika, Uttar Pradesh on September 1, 2017, the man is stating that his daughter committed suicide by hanging and after which the local police carried the dead body and kept it in the district hospital. Even after waiting for a long time in the morning, when the vehicle that carries the dead body was not made available by the district hospital, he was forced to load his daughter’s body in a rickshaw and transport it from the district hospital to the postmortem house.

We also found a video related to this news on a YouTube channel called Cmn News. The video, uploaded on September 2, 2017, also stated that the incident was from Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh, where the body was taken to a postmortem house on a rickshaw.

Vishvas News contacted Mahendra Pratap, editor of the magazine UP, via phone. He said, “This picture is from 2017. The incident was from Hamirpur, where the relatives loaded the body on a rickshaw and took it to the postmortem house. The related video is also in the news. “

We scanned the profile of the Twitter user @MANJULtoons who shared the viral post. We found that the user is a cartoonist and has 163K followers on Twitter. His account is also verified.
