Fact Check: Picture of an Iraqi man shot in head in 2014 viral with fake claim, has nothing to do with Palestine-Israeli conflict

Vishvas News found in the investigation that the viral claim is false. Actually this picture is from Iraq. The man who was shot in the head is Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al-Ravi of Iraq. Sheikh al-Ravi was shot in the head in 2014 during clashes between Iraqi soldiers and Iraqi religious groups. These pictures are from that time. These pictures have nothing to do with the clashes between Israel and the Palestinians.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A picture going viral on social media shows a man laughing with a bullet in the head. It is being claimed in the post that this is a picture of Palestine. We investigated and found the claim to be fake. The picture is actually from Iraq. The man who was shot in the head is Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al-Ravi. Sheikh al-Ravi was shot in the head in 2014 during clashes between Iraqi soldiers and Iraqi religious groups. These pictures are from that time. These pictures have nothing to do with the clashes between Israel and the Palestinians.

Claim

The viral post consists of a collage of 3 photographs, in which a man can be with a bullet in the head. Despite this, the man can be seen smiling. The caption of the photo reads, “Allaahu Akbar The power of Allaah. A Palestinian Sheikh who was worshiping in the mosque aqsa was shot by the Zionist of Israel. By the power of Allaah a zionist sniper bullet that was as big as a thumb could not penetrate the head of the sheikh.”

Investigation

To investigate the viral post, we searched these images on Google reverse image with the keywords ‘man smiling with bullet in his head’. We found a report from alarabiya.net, in which this incident was said to beof Iraq. The report was filed on August 10, 2014 and it stated that the incident is from Iraq.

We also found this news published on 9news.com.au on August 13, 2014 with the same information.

For more information, we spoke to Hassan Al Saqib, web editor of alarabiya.net. He said, “The information given about this picture on our website is correct. This picture is from Iraq, when Sheikh Mohammed Obaid al-Ravi, a resident of the city of Fallujah, was wounded in the head by a gunshot during a shootout between the revolutionaries and Iraqi government troops.”

This post was shared by Facebook user Au Ro, a resident of Pondicherry. The user has 814 followers on Facebook.
