Fact Check: Old Video Of People Drowning In Oman Sea Falsely Linked To Cyclone Biparjoy

New Delhi (Vishvas News) – A video showing people being swept away by high sea waves is circulating widely on social media platforms, and users are mistakenly associating it with Cyclone Biparjoy, which has caused significant damage in various parts of India.
Vishvas News fact-checked the viral post and found that the video is unrelated to India or Cyclone Biparjoy; it is, in fact, from the Gulf country of Oman.
What’s going viral?
On June 16, Twitter user ‘Sindh Young Teachers Forum’ shared a 20-second video and wrote, “Angry waves took away two lives… as seen in the video #CycloneBiporjoy #CycloneBiporjoy.”
Investigation:
In our reverse image search using Google, we found the viral video on the YouTube channel of The Tribune, a Chandigarh-headquartered national news outlet, posted on July 14, 2022. The caption here said an Indian family was washed away in the sea at Mughsail Beach in Oman.
We found the same video uploaded on India Today’s YouTube channel on the same date, July 14, 2022. The description of this video also said it was an incident from Oman.
Further in our investigation, we found a news article on the Times of Oman website, which reported that eight people were caught in the waves at Al-Mughsail beach in Oman. Three of those people were rescued immediately, while the bodies of two out of the five remaining missing individuals were recovered. For more details, read this news report.
Vishvas News also reached out to Narendra Ahir, a reporter of Dainik Jagran in Saurashtra, who has been covering Cyclone Biparjoy. Ahir confirmed that although Biparjoy had a significant impact in Saurashtra, the viral video is not from the region. He said this 2022 video from Oman had gone viral earlier as well and people had falsely claimed it to be from Mumbai and Gujarat.
In the end, we scanned the profile of the Twitter user ‘Sindh Young Teachers Forum’. It has 654 followers.
