Fact Check: Old Poster Of PM Modi Being ‘Most Popular’ Leader Shared With False Claim By Linking It To G20 Summit
Based on the survey data of ‘Morning Consult’, released in the month of April, posters of PM Modi being ‘most popular’ compared to other global leaders were put up in New Delhi. The picture of this poster was put up in the global media long before the G20 meeting. The viral claim that the poster was erected to welcome the heads of state is false and misleading.

New Delhi Vishvas Team – In context of the 18th G20 Summit held in New Delhi, a picture is being widely circulated on social media platforms claiming that it is a picture installed by the Centre to welcome the heads of state from various countries of the world. In the picture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been shown as the most popular leader among other global leaders.
Vishvas News investigated the claim and found it to be false. No such poster has been put up by the Centre to welcome the heads of the states who visited India for the G20 Summit. The viral picture is originally from April 2023, but is being shared now with the false claim that the picture was recently installed in the streets of New Delhi.
What Is Going Viral?
Social media user ‘Sheik Naseer’ shared the viral post and wrote, “What a unique way of welcoming guests of #G20Bharat. #G20Delhi.”
Many other social media users have also shared this picture with similar claims. Many other verified profiles including Rohini Singh also shared this picture with fake claims. However, Singh deleted this post later.
Investigation
The viral picture showing PM Modi as the most popular leader is being claimed to be a poster put up to welcome the heads of states before the G20 Summit that was held in New Delhi. To find the original source of the viral picture, we took the help of a reverse image search. During the search, we found this picture was published with a report on September 5, 2023.
This picture has been included in the report as a file image. According to the information given with it, this is a picture of April 6, 2023. News agency AP is mentioned in the credit line of the picture.
Based on the information received from here, a keyword search led us to a report published on csmonitor.com website on April 6, 2023, in which this photo has been used with the same credit line.
In the picture, PM Modi’s popularity has been depicted quoting figures from a survey. In news search, we found links to several reports published in April 2023, in which this was mentioned.
According to India Today’s report on April 3, 2023, with an approval rating of 76 per cent, PM Modi has once again been successful in achieving the title of the world’s ‘most popular’ leader.
According to the survey released by ‘Morning Consult’, PM Modi was ahead of US President Joe Biden and British President Rishi Sunak in terms of popularity. The data of this survey of ‘Morning Consult’ can be seen on X where it was released on April 3.
It is clear from our investigation that the picture of PM Modi being on top in terms of popularity was based on the results of a survey released in April 2023. We contacted TV journalist Abhishek Upadhyay, who covered the G20 summit, regarding the viral picture. “No such poster was put up in New Delhi before the G20 meeting,” he confirmed.
The user who shared the viral picture with a false claim is followed by more than 2,000 people on Instagram.
Conclusion: Based on the survey data of ‘Morning Consult’, released in the month of April, posters of PM Modi being ‘most popular’ compared to other global leaders were put up in New Delhi.
