Fact Check: No communal angle in students’ clash in Delhi; viral video shared with misleading claim

The incident of clash and stabbing between students of two different schools in Delhi’s Karawal Nagar is being shared on social media with malicious intent by giving it a communal colour. There was no communal angle in this incident.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A video is going viral on social media where a student can be seen lying on a stretcher in a hospital in an injured condition. Many users have shared other videos of this incident. It is being claimed that people of a particular community attacked Hindu students with knives in Karawal Nagar in Delhi, injuring around 20 students.

Vishvas News in its investigation found this claim to be false and inflammatory. There was a fight between students of two different schools in North-East Delhi during which five students were injured and admitted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. While taking action in this case of stabbing, the police had also arrested six students. The same incident is being viral with a false claim by giving it a communal colour.

Claim:

Social media user ‘Vishal Faujdar Sunsunwal’ shared the viral video (archived link) with the caption, “Arvind Kejriwal…..dekh tu Delhi ka chief minister hai….aankh khol kar dekh tere basaye Bangladeshi aur Rohingya Muslim Hindu children saath What are you doing?? On March 20, from Khajuri to Karaval Nagar, people of Muslim community attacked Hindu children who were returning after giving 12 th paper with knives. More than 20 children were badly injured.. No news in media, police and all leaders Why are you silent…???”

Several other users have shared the same video with similar and identical claims. Several users on Twitter have also shared the video of the incident with the same claim.

Investigation:

News search found many such reports, in which this incident is mentioned. According to a March 21 report in Dainik Jagran, “Five students of Karawal Nagar school were badly injured after a scuffle broke out between students of Delhi-based Government Boys Senior Secondary School, Karawal Nagar and Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, Khajuri Khas. Now taking action in this matter, the Delhi Police has detained six accused students.”

The report states, “The police, after questioning the arrested accused, revealed that one of the students disclosed that 3 days ago when he was going on his bike near Dayalpur bus stand, some boys stopped him. They asked him about his school and the reason for riding his bike near the school, which later led to a dispute.”

News agency ANI also reported about the arrest of six students in the case while giving information about the incident. ANI also shared the statement of Delhi Police in this matter, according to which there was no communal angle in this dispute.

A report by The Times of India quoted Joy Tirkey, DCP, North-East Delhi, in which he denied that there was any communal angle in the case, saying that the “accused and the victim involved in the incident belong to the same community”. In this case, the police have registered a case of an attempt to murder.

In search, we found a video bulletin of a YouTube channel named Jhalko Delhi, in which the DCP of North-East Delhi can be clearly heard saying that there was no communal angle in the case and the boys involved belonged to the same community.

We contacted Chhaya Sharma, Joint Commissioner of Police, Eastern Range regarding the viral video. “The fight between the two groups of students was not communal,” he said.

The user who shared the viral post with the false claim appears to be inspired by a particular ideology.

Conclusion: The incident of clash and stabbing between students of two different schools in Delhi’s Karawal Nagar is being shared on social media with malicious intent by giving it a communal colour. There was no communal angle in this incident.
