Fact Check: MMA Fight Video Falsely Claimed To Be From Olympics Goes Viral

Vishvas News found in its investigation that the claim about the viral fight video is false and has no connection with the Paris Olympics. It is from a karate combat between a Brazilian and an American player and is being shared with a misleading claim.

New Delhi (Visvas News). A fight video has gone viral on social media, with some users claiming it is from a Paris Olympics boxing match. The video purportedly features Tunisian player Youssef knocking out an Israeli player in one go. The claim is false, Vishvas News investigations found.

The viral video has no connection with the Olympics. The video is of a Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) combat match between Brazilian and American players, but has been shared with a misleading claim.

What is going viral?

On August 4, 2024, Facebook user Aamir Singaria (Archive) shared the said video with the caption, “Tunisian player Youssef beats Israeli player with a single kick… #ParisOlympics2024”

Investigation

To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we extracted several key frames from the video and searched for them with the help of Google Reverse Image. We found the video on the official X account of Karate Combat. The video was uploaded on June 29, 2024. According to the information, the video pertains to a match from the fighting league Karate Combat.

Based on the information, we searched on Google with the help of relevant keywords and found a longer version of the video on the official YouTube channel of Karate Combat. It was also uploaded on June 29, 2024. According to the details provided, the fight was between American player James Vick and Brazilian player Rafael Alves. The match was part of the karate segment of the main event of MMA 2024 held that day, in Orlando, Florida. Alves won it with a knockout head kick.

The Paris Olympics began on July 26, 2024.

For further clarification, we reached out to Dainik Jagran’s sports editor Abhishek Tripathi who confirmed that the viral video is not from the Olympics.

Finally, we scanned the Facebook account of the user who had shared the video with the false claim and found that the account primarily shares posts related to a particular ideology. It has over 12000 followers. The user’s profile indicates he is a resident of Delhi.
