Investigation
Vishvas News first did keyword search to know the truth of the viral message. We found the use of the word India in many official British documents even before 1947. The name India was used even in the Government of India Act of 1858, 89 years before independence.
Since the name Oxford Dictionary has been taken from the viral post, we did an India search at oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com. No full form like the viral claim came anywhere in the reply. The meaning read “a country in southern Asia which used to be part of the British Empire. It became independent and a member of the Commonwealth in 1947.”
Now we did a google search to find from where the name India was taken. We found this information on several websites, “The name India is derived from Indus, an old Persian word.”
We contacted noted historian and writer Akshay Jog on this subject. He told us “This post is absolutely wrong. The name India is derived from the Indus Valley.”
Vishvas News at the end of the investigation scanned the user who shared the viral claim. In the social scanning of Facebook user Ravi Ramesh Punjani, it was found that the user is a resident of Mumbai.
Conclusion: Vishvas News in its investigation found that this claim is false. There is no full form of India. The name is derived from the Sanskrit and Parsi word Indus, which means Hindu.
