Fact Check: Elon Musk did not tweet this, viral screenshot is fake

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A screenshot of a tweet purportedly made by Elon Musk is currently viral on social media. According to the screenshot, after buying twitter, Elon Musk tweeted ‘now I am going to buy Facebook too and I will delete it later.’ The viral claim turned out to be false in the investigation of Vishvas News. No such tweet has been made by Elon Musk.

What Is Going Viral ?

Facebook user Angelo Banes Jr shared the viral post on April 27. The caption accompanying the post read, “Elon Musk gonna buy Facebook and he will delete it same as what facebook did to friendster. OMG karma is real.”

Investigation –

We scanned Elon Musk’s Twitter account to know the truth of the viral screenshot, but we could not find any tweet related to the viral claim. After this, we carefully looked at the viral screenshot. We found that this tweet was posted on 25 March 2022.Then we started checking the archived version of Elon Musk’s tweets with the help of https://web.archive.org/, but we could not find any information related to the viral screenshot here either.

Taking a closer look at the screenshots, we also found that the pattern of the viral screenshot is quite different from that of Twitter.

Taking the investigation further, we started scanning the archive version of Elon Musk with the help of Google webcache, but even here we could not find any information related to the viral claim. We also searched on Google through many keywords. But again, we could not find any credible information or media report related to the viral claim.

We found that this claim has been viral on social media since 2018. Actually, in 2018, Elon Musk had tweeted and said – ‘he does not know what Facebook is. He doesn’t like Facebook.’ Responding to this, a user said delete your company’s page from Facebook. Then, Elon Musk responded and said he doesn’t know his company has a facebook page.’ I will delete them, they are lame.’ After this, comedian James Schlarman, writing an article as a Satire, taunted Elon Musk that he is going to buy Facebook soon and then delete it. Responding to this report, Elon Musk said that I don’t like Facebook at all, I will never do so.

At the end of the investigation, we scanned the account of Facebook user Angelo Banes Jr who shared the claim. From scanning, we came to know that the user is a resident of Dubai and 455 people follow him on Facebook.
