New Delhi Vishvas News – A video allegedly depicting a Congress rally has surfaced on social media ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, showing individuals chanting ‘Modi-Modi’. Some users claim that this incident occurred during a Congress rally in Ahmednagar, Gujarat, where people voiced support for PM Modi.
Vishvas News conducted an investigation and found that the viral video had been manipulated. The original footage dates back about six and a half years, capturing a Congress rally in Gujarat where attendees were actually chanting in support of Rahul Gandhi. The audio supporting PM Modi was inserted into the video separately.
What Is Going Viral?
The viral post originated from a Facebook user named ‘Surender Pal Singh’ (archive link), who shared the video on March 18 with a caption suggesting the humiliation of the Congress party. Singh claimed that during the Ahmednagar rally, Congress leader Alpesh Thakur called for cheers for Rahul Gandhi, but the crowd responded with ‘Modi Zindabad’ slogans, implying a shift in public sentiment.
Investigation:
To verify the authenticity of the viral video, keyframes were extracted and searched using Google Lens. A video related to this event was found on the YouTube channel of the Gujarat Congress, uploaded on October 24, 2017. This video documented the Navsarjan Jansandesh Mahasammelan in Gandhinagar, where around the 33-minute mark, attendees can be seen chanting ‘Zindabad-Zindabad’ in support of Rahul Gandhi.
The edited nature of the viral video was confirmed when Jeevan Kapuria, Associate Editor of Gujarati Dainik Jagran, analyzed it. He stated that the original footage was from the Navsarjan Jansandesh Mahasammelan in Gandhinagar, approximately seven and a half years ago, and had been edited to misrepresent the event.
The Facebook user who shared the manipulated video has 608 friends on the platform.
Conclusion: The viral video has been altered to falsely suggest that attendees at a Congress rally in Gujarat were chanting in support of PM Modi. The original video actually shows support for Rahul Gandhi at the Navsarjan Jansandesh Mahasammelan in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, in October 2017.
