Fact-Check: Claim of Tata Group building new parliament house for Re 1 is false

The claim being made on social media about the construction of the new Parliament Building is false. The Tata Group is not building the new Parliament House for a mere token amount of Re 1, nor has the building been completed in 17 months.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): After Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected the new under-construction Parliament building, a photo on social media is getting viral that Tata Group has constructed the new Parliament building at the cost of just Re 1. Along with this, it is also being claimed that the construction of this building has been completed by the Tat Group in a record 17 months. Vishvas News investigated the claims and found that both are false claims. We found that Tata had received a tender of Rs 862 crore in the year 2020 for the construction of the Parliament Building, which is still underway after three years.

Claim:

Social media user ‘Devi Veeramachaneni’ has shared the viral graphics with the claim that the construction of the new Parliament House has been completed in just 17 months and that the Tatas have only received payment of Re 1.

Investigation:

During the search, we found many such old reports about the acquisition of a contract by Tata Projects to build the new Parliament building under the Central Vista Redevelopment Plan. The company had bid Rs 861.9 crore for this, which was only Rs 3.1 crore less than Larsen & Toubro’s bid. This is also mentioned in many other reports. In all the news reports, the cost of the project has been mentioned as Rs 861.9 crore.

On September 22, 2020, while replying to Unstarred Question No. 1896 in Lok Sabha regarding the Central Vista Redevelopment Project, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informed that the estimated cost of construction of the new Parliament House is Rs 971 crore. The cost of developing other buildings and the estimated cost of redevelopment of Central Vista Avenue will be decided after the finalization of the plan.

The ministry replied that open competitive bidding was called for the construction of the new Parliament House and the lowest bid of Rs 861.91 crore was placed by Tata Projects Limited in the process. Tata Projects got the contract for the construction of the new Parliament House for Rs 861.9 crore and not for Re 1 as claimed in the viral post.

The viral post claims that the construction work of the Parliament House has been completed within 17 months. In our investigation, this claim also turned out to be false. According to PIB, the construction work of the new Parliament building started in December 2020. According to information available on Central Vista’s website, only the Duty Path project has been completed, while work on projects such as the New Parliament House, Common Central Secretariat and Executive Enclave is underway.

It is worth mentioning that recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the new Parliament House, in which glimpses of this under-construction building were revealed. Vishvas News contacted PTI-Bhasha’s Parliament correspondent Deepak Ranjan regarding the claim made in the viral graphics.

He informed that the construction work of the new Parliament House has not yet been completed, nor is the Tata group completing this project for a token amount of Re 1. However, he added that its construction is expected to be completed soon. According to several reports, the construction cost of the new Parliament House has increased by about 29 per cent and this amount has now crossed Rs 1,250 crore.

The profile of the user who shared the viral graphics with the false claim has been active on Facebook since October 31, 2022.

Conclusion: The claim being made on social media about the construction of the new Parliament Building is false. The Tata Group is not building the new Parliament House for a mere token amount of Re 1, nor has the building been completed in 17 months.
