Fact Check: PM Modi Did Not Ignore Australian Captain Pat Cummins After Presenting Him ICC World Cup Trophy

The claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi ignored the Australian team captain after presenting him with the ICC World Cup trophy is inaccurate and the video clip going viral with this claim is edited. Contrary to the allegation, PM Modi did shake hands with the Australian team captain after handing him the trophy. Subsequently, he also engaged with the Australian Deputy Prime Minister and other players from the Australian team. Therefore, the claim that he ignored the Australian captain after awarding him the trophy is false.

New Delhi | Vishvas News: Australia emerged victorious against India, securing their sixth title in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, present at the stadium, joined Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles in presenting the World Cup trophy to the Australian team captain. A circulating video on social media suggests that the Prime Minister overlooked the Australian captain after handing him the trophy. However, upon investigation, Vishvas News determined this claim to be misleading.

The viral clip is a snippet taken out of context from the complete incident. The unedited video reveals that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, not only handed the trophy to Australian captain Pat Cummins but also shook hands with him. Subsequently, they left the stage and interacted with other members of the Australian team.

Vishvas News Investigation:

The viral video clip, lasting 15 seconds, features Australia’s team captain, Pat Cummins, on stage holding the trophy, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi walks past the stage alongside the Australian Deputy Prime Minister without acknowledging him. This method of sharing misinformation on social media involves extracting a few seconds from a larger context.

Upon close examination of the viral video clip, it becomes evident that the snippet is from the middle of the incident and has been taken out of context. A Google reverse image search on keyframes from the viral video led to the discovery of several related pictures on the verified handle of the news agency ANI, providing clarity on the context of the viral clip.

The ANI post includes four pictures showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi shaking hands with the Australian team captain and presenting him with the Cricket World Cup trophy (ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023). This is clearly demonstrated in a side-by-side comparison of the original and viral video frames in the following collage.
