Prime Minister Narendra Modi, present at the stadium, joined Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles in presenting the World Cup trophy to the Australian team captain. A circulating video on social media suggests that the Prime Minister overlooked the Australian captain after handing him the trophy. However, upon investigation, Vishvas News determined this claim to be misleading.
The viral clip is a snippet taken out of context from the complete incident. The unedited video reveals that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, not only handed the trophy to Australian captain Pat Cummins but also shook hands with him. Subsequently, they left the stage and interacted with other members of the Australian team.

Social media user ‘c_r_i_c_k_e_t_l_o_v_e_r315 ‘ has shared the viral video clip, in which the captain of the Australian team is seen standing on the stage and Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seen moving away from the stage. Many other users on different social media platforms have shared this video with similar claims.

The viral video clip, lasting 15 seconds, features Australia’s team captain, Pat Cummins, on stage holding the trophy, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi walks past the stage alongside the Australian Deputy Prime Minister without acknowledging him. This method of sharing misinformation on social media involves extracting a few seconds from a larger context.
Upon close examination of the viral video clip, it becomes evident that the snippet is from the middle of the incident and has been taken out of context. A Google reverse image search on keyframes from the viral video led to the discovery of several related pictures on the verified handle of the news agency ANI, providing clarity on the context of the viral clip.
The ANI post includes four pictures showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi shaking hands with the Australian team captain and presenting him with the Cricket World Cup trophy (ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023). This is clearly demonstrated in a side-by-side comparison of the original and viral video frames in the following collage.
When sharing the viral clip from his verified handle, user Surya Pratap Singh accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of disrespecting the spirit of sports. In a lengthy video clip shared on his post, Bharatiya Janata Party’s national media panellist and Bihar BJP spokesperson Jairam Viplav provides clear evidence (archive link) that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while on stage with the Australian Deputy Prime Minister, presented the World Cup trophy to the Australian team captain, shook hands with him, and subsequently interacted with other players from the Australian team present on the field.
Another user Abhinav Prakash also shared the unedited video (archive link) of the incident. In the video, Prime Minister Narendra Modi could be seen presenting the Cricket World Cup Trophy to Australian captain Pat Cummins and shaking hands with him.
Our investigation makes it clear that the viral video clip is a selected excerpt of the original incident, which is being shared with a misleading claim. Dainik Jagran’s sports editor Abhishek Tripathi said that the viral video clip is a part of the picture. PM Modi and the Australian Deputy Prime Minister gave the trophy to Pat Cummins and shook hands with him and left from there.
