A video of a bus accident in Indonesia is being shared with a false claim that it is from the northeastern state of Meghalaya in India.
New Delhi (Vishvas News): A video has been going viral on the internet in which a bus can be seen falling into a gorge. It has been claimed that the accident took place in Meghalaya due to the negligence of the bus driver. Vishvas News investigated the viral video and found the claim linked with it to be misleading. During the investigation, we found that the video is not of Meghalaya but of the bus accident which took place in the Central Java province of Indonesia. The accident took place on May 7 and is now being shared with a false claim.
What’s Going Viral?
Social media user (archive link) ‘Shri Badrinath eva Kedarnath Dham Snr’ shared the viral video with and wrote, “Meghalaya: Driver went to have tea, bus engine was on, forgot to apply the handbrake, then what?” The bus fell into a nearby ditch.” Several other users have also shared the same video with the same claim. Many users have shared this video on other platforms including Twitter as an incident from Meghalaya.
Vishvas News Investigation:
Vishvas News searched about the accident but could not find any such news report which mentioned any recent bus accident in Meghalaya. We then did a reverse image search of the keyframes of the video with the help of the Invid tool and found a report published on the website of palembang.tribunnews.com on May 7, in which the image used matched the visuals of the viral video.
The report, published on the website of palembang.tribunnews.com on May 7, mentioned Indonesia as the place of the accident. We translated this report written in the Indonesian language with the help of Google Translate. According to the information given in the news report, the incident took place on May 7, when a tourist bus fell into a gorge in the Bojong district of Indonesia. This incident is from Central Java province. The report is accompanied by a bulletin, which confirmed that it is related to Indonesia.
In search, we also found the same video uploaded on a YouTube channel named ‘tvOneNews’, which mentioned that it is a video of a bus accident in Indonesia. This video has also been shared on another YouTube channel as a bus accident in Indonesia. It is clear from our investigation that this video of the bus accident is not related to Meghalaya.
We contacted the Indonesian fact-checking agency CEK Facta.com for additional confirmation. Fact checker Adi Syafitra said, “This video of the bus accident is from a recent incident in Indonesia”.
The user who shared the viral video with the misleading claim has a following of around 1.2 million people on Facebook.
