Fact Check: This photo of Bollywood boycott over Urdu and Islam is edited and years old

Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found that the image was edited. The original picture is from 2012, when there was a protest in Amritsar after the Nirbhaya incident.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A photo of a protest is going viral on social media, in which a girl has a big poster in her hand with text reading that Bollywood is the den for the promotion of Islam and Urdu. Social media users are sharing it claiming that this is a recent picture from a protest against Bollywood. Vishvas News found in its investigation that this picture is edited. The original picture is from the 2012 protest against Nirbhaya gang rape.

What’s in a viral post?

Facebook user Mohan Choudhary uploaded the viral picture, in which the poster is seen in the protester’s hand. It reads, ”Indian Bollywood is a haven for Islam and Urdu. That’s why you get to hear the words like Islam is great in every movie and Ali, Maula or Khuda in every song. boycott Bollywood”.

Investigation

To begin our investigation, we first started checking the viral image using Google Reverse Images. In our search, we found this picture on the BBC’s website on 21 December 2012. However, in this original picture, the banner that the protester has held reads, ‘Don’t tell me how to dress! Tell them not to rape”.

We went ahead with our investigation and found the original photo on the Getty Images website. According to the information given with the picture, “Indian students hold placards as they shout slogans against a recent rape that took place in New Delhi during a protest in Amritsar on December 20, 2012. The December 16 assault on a bus in New Delhi, which left a 23-year-old victim fighting for her life, has triggered nationwide revulsion and protests. AFP PHOTO/NARINDER NANU”.

To confirm the viral picture, Vishvas News contacted the photographer Narinder Nanu, who took the picture, via Instagram and shared the viral post with him. He refuted the viral claim by sharing the original picture with Vishvas News.

Vishvas News scanned the profile of Facebook user Mohan Chaudhary, who shared the fake post. He is a resident of Bangalore.
