Fact Check: West Bengal BJP Chief Dilip Ghosh’s Old Picture viral with fake claim

The viral post is fake. It is true that Dilip Ghosh was tested positive for coronavirus but this photo is not recent. This was captured when he was hospitalized due to some other ailment in 2018.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A picture of BJP West Bengal chief Dilip Ghosh is shared with a claim that he met Kailash Vijayvargiya in hospital without wearing a mask, despite testing positive for Coronavirus.

Vishvas News investigation revealed the claim is fake. Though it is true that Dilip Ghosh was admitted in a private hospital on 16 October after testing positive for coronavirus, the viral picture is not of any recent meeting. The picture was captured in 2018 when Dilip Ghosh was hospitalized due to some other ailments.

Claim

West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh can be seen on a bed with Kailash Vijayvargiya standing near him in a picture. It is shared writing,  “Meeting #COVID Positive Dilip Ghosh without wearing any mask. Only BJP Leaders can Show Such Courage.”  The archived version of the post can be seen here.

Investigation

We searched this photo on the Internet using Google reverse image search. We found the viral picture in a news article published by english.kolkata24x7.com on 28 January 2018 stating that Ghosh was admitted in the hospital due to slipped disc.

According to an article in Jagran.com published on 17 October, Dilip Ghosh tested positive for Coronavirus and was hospitalized.

We contacted Kailash Vijayvargiya for verification. “This picture is from 2018,” said Vijayvargiya.

We found that Ghosh is admitted in AMRI Hospital, Salt Lake. We contacted hospital’s PRO for further clarification.  “Dilip Ghosh is undergoing treatment in the Covid section. According to government guidelines, no one, including family members, is allowed to visit the patient. This photo is not from the Covid ward,” said Rohan Chattopadhyay, communication manager of AMRI Hospital.

Social scanning of the user Garima Kaushik who shared the viral picture revealed that she has joined in 2013.

Conclusion: The viral post is fake. It is true that Dilip Ghosh was tested positive for coronavirus but this photo is not recent. This was captured when he was hospitalized due to some other ailment in 2018.
