Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ujjwala Yojana in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh in 2016 and a portion of the same program is being reverse-edited to claim that a woman beneficiary refused to take free gas connection from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on public platform.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A video is being shared on social media with the claim that a woman beneficiary of the government’s cooking gas scheme refused to take the cylinder connection from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on a public platform. Vishvas News’ investigation found this claim to be propaganda against Prime Minister Modi. The viral video has been reversed with the help of editing, making it appear that the woman refused to take the gas connection and returned.

About six years ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the free cooking gas scheme in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. During this time he had handed over gas connections to the beneficiaries. The viral video clip is of this programme to distribute gas connection. However, the video has been reverse edited and is being shared with a false claim.

Claim:

Social media user ‘Safeer Choudhary’ shared the viral video with the claim that the woman beneficiary refused to take free gas connection due to rising gas prices.

Several other users have shared the same video with similar claims. Several users on Twitter have also shared the video clip with the same claim.

Investigation

A YouTube search with keywords found a video bulletin uploaded on NDTV’s official YouTube channel about six years ago, which is a longer version of the viral video clip.

In this video bulletin, the woman can be seen coming on stage and accepting the gas connection from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The video of this programme was made live on May 1, 2016, on the official YouTube channel of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to the information given, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana from Ballia, Varanasi and during the same program he also distributed free gas connections to the beneficiaries.

Prime Minister Modi can be seen distributing free gas connections from frame 26 in the video. The viral video clip is of another woman beneficiary who was handed over a free gas connection by the Prime Minister and the woman walked down the stage carrying it.

We contacted Shashwat Mishra, Output Head of Dainik Jagran, Varanasi, regarding the viral video clip. He said, “This is a video of an old programme when in 2016 Prime Minister Modi launched the Ujjwala program from Ballia in Varanasi and during this time he also gave free gas connections to many women beneficiaries.” He said that during this period there was no incident in which any beneficiary refused to take the connection.

It is clear that the video going viral is edited. The user who shared the edited video clip with the false claim has a following of over 50,000 people on Facebook.

According to information on the website pmuy.gov.in, in May 2016, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana’ with the objective of providing clean energy sources to rural and underprivileged households.
