Fact Check: Viral Video Claiming Mahua Moitra’s Answer to Morning Source of Energy as Sex Is Fake

The viral video with the claim that TMC candidate from Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat of West Bengal Mahua Moitra answered “Morning Source of Energy” with “Sex” is edited and fake.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video clip of Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) candidate Mahua Moitra’s election campaign from the Krishnanagar constituency of West Bengal is going viral on social media. The claim suggests that in response to a question asked by a journalist, she said ‘sex’, referring it to as a secret to her ‘Source of Energy’.

Upon investigation, Vishvas News found this claim to be fake. The viral video clip is altered and circulated with the intention of election propaganda. In the original video, when Mahua Moitra was asked by a journalist about her source of energy, she responded with eggs,not  ‘sex’, as falsely claimed.

What is viral?

While sharing the video clip (archive link) of Mahua Moitra, social media user ‘Comrade Hasbonabliski’ wrote, “Sex is the source of my energy.- Mahua Moitra.”

Many other users have also shared this video clip (archive link) with similar claims.

Investigation

The viral video clip features the logo of NTT channel. We found the original video (archive link) on NTT’s YouTube channel. The video spanning about half an hour is related to   Mahua Moitra’s election campaign. In a frame of two minutes and 35 seconds, journalist Tamal Saha asked, “What’s youyr source of energy?” to which Mahua Moitra says, “Eggs.” 

Tamal Saha has also clarified this video clip (archive link) through his official X handle.

She has written, “I want to make it clear, because this is my interview. I asked Mahua Moitra, “What is your morning source of energy?” Mahua replied, “Eggs.”

We contacted Tamal Saha regarding the viral video clip. Tamal confirmed that this is a part of his interview but the audio has been tampered with malicious intent, making the word ‘eggs’ sound like ‘sex’. He said, “Mahua Moitra did not use this word while answering the question asked by me.”

It is noteworthy that Mahua Moitra is contesting from the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha seat of West Bengal, where voting is scheduled for May 13, 2024, in the fourth phase. According to the Election Commission’s notification (archive link), voting is to be held in seven phases for a total of 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal. The first phase of voting began on April 19, 2024 for a total of 102 seats
