New Delhi (Vishvas News). A picture of people in fancy wardrobes like saree over pants and vermilion on forehead is viral on social media with a claim that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students are against Hindu tradition wearing saree, dhoti and vermilion. The post alleges that this was a part of students protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
Vishvas News investigation revealed the viral claim is fake. Activist Panchali Kar, whose picture in saree and vermilion is now viral, clarified that they were not students of JNU and did not protest against Hindu culture.
Claim
Facebook user Sameer Kaushik posted this picture on 3 January writing, “…Progressive students of #JNU opposed Hindu women in sarees, bindi, sindoor. A boy wearing saffron dhoti, kurta, nose ring and vermilion on forehead in JNU opposes Hindu culture… # at the time of opposition to CAA… … Its only purpose is to dig up the roots of Hindutva, discredit Hindutva, plot against Hindu society and favor jihadi fundamentalist Islam, to spread the agenda of Islam through all possible means…” The archived version of the post can be seen here .
Investigation
We uploaded the viral image and searched it on the Internet using Google reverse image search tool. We found this picture on Panchali Kar’s Facebook profile posted on 30 December 2019 with caption, “Pride, 2019 at Baghbazar Street.”
We also found this picture in khaskhobor.com and on youthkiawaaz.com that identified activisit Kar.
The article clarified that the picture is of pride parade, an annual outdoor event celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, non-binary and queer (LGBTQ) social and self acceptance, achievements, legal rights, and pride in Kolkata on 29 December 2019.
Vishvas News contacted Panchali Kar for verification. “The viral picture is mine. It is from 2019 Kolkata Pride Walk and I personally have no connection with JNU. The viral claim is absolutely false. The parade was primarily for the LGBTQIA community. However, some people raised slogans against the NRC and CAA,” said Kar.
Social scanning of the user who shared the viral post revealed that he has 15,479 followers on Facebook.
