Fact Check: Post claiming that UP Police started 30-day mask check campaign in Bareilly is fake

The viral post is fake. Police have not started any such mask checking campaign in Bareilly for 30 days.

New Delhi (Vishvas Team). A viral post on social media is shared with a claim that a 30-day police mask checking campaign has been started in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. It also alerts people to wear facemask to avoid fine invoice. 

Vishvas News received this claim for fact checking on its Fact Checking WhatsApp chatbot (+919599299372). Vishvas News investigation revealed the claim is fake.  Police have not yet started mask-checking operation in Bareilly.

Claim

Facebook page Bareilly The City of Love, posted a claim on 20 November writing, “Essential information:  From tomorrow at Bareilly in the morning, a 30-day campaign of police mask checking will be carried out…” It also alerts people to use facemask to avoid Challan. Investigation

We first searched on the Internet using keywords for news reports about the viral claim. We found many such messages shared on social media platforms without details about location. However, we did not find any authentic media reports or official order about Police mask checking campaign in Bareilly.

We contacted Bareilly SP Rohit Singh Sajwan to verify the claim. Denying the claims, Singh clarified to us that no such mask checking campaign is being conducted in Bareilly. 

Social scanning of the Facebook page that posted the viral claim revealed that it has 6676 followers.

Conclusion: The viral post is fake. Police have not started any such mask checking campaign in Bareilly for 30 days.
