Fact Check: Photo From Indian Cricketer Prasidh Krishna’s Wedding Going Viral With False Claims

Now, a picture is going viral on the internet with claims that it is from the wedding of Nirmala Sithraman’s daughter. Vishvas News investigated the viral image and found that the claim related to the picture is false. The viral picture is actually from the marriage of renowned Indian cricketer Prasidh Krishna, who tied the knot with his girlfriend Rachna Krishna on June 8. The image captures a moment during the wedding ceremony where Rachna, the bride, is seated on her father’s lap as part of the Kanyadaan ritual.

What’s going viral?

The viral post originated from a Facebook user named Ravi Ravindra on June 10. He wrote in the caption, “Yesterday was the marriage of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter. Let it be removed or not, that is a later matter, but why is she sitting on the priest’s lap?” Other users mistakenly believed the post to be true and subsequently shared it.

Vishvas News Investigation:

To authenticate the viral picture, our investigation began with a careful examination of the image. We noticed the word “SAKAL” written on it, prompting us to explore the social media accounts of ‘Sakal.’ During our search, we discovered that the viral picture had been uploaded on the verified Facebook page of ‘Sakal’ on June 9, 2023. Alongside the viral picture, there were several other images related to the event. The caption read, “Team India’s fast bowler, Prasidh Krishna, tied the knot with his girlfriend Rachna on June 8th. Numerous cricketers attended the wedding, and their engagement took place on June 6th.”

Furthermore, we conducted a Google search and found news articles about the viral picture on Jagran.com. According to the news report, “Krishna, the fast bowler of the Indian team and Rajasthan Royals, married his girlfriend. They got engaged on June 6th and two days later, their wedding took place. The wedding photos have now become widely popular on social media, showcasing a traditional ceremony.” Prasidh Krishna himself shared these pictures on his verified social media account.

During our investigation, we came across multiple reports explaining the significant ritual known as Kanyadaan, which is performed during weddings. Kanyadaan translates to “Sending off the bride” and involves the bride sitting on her father’s lap while he presents her as a gift to the groom. The father then asks the groom three times to accept his daughter as his life partner. The man seen in the viral picture with Rachna Krishna on his lap is not a priest but her father.

Regarding the marriage of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter, we conducted a Google search using relevant keywords. While we found numerous news reports, including Jagran.com, none of the pictures matched the viral picture.

To gather more information, we reached out to Abhishek Tripathi, the Sports Editor of Dainik Jagran. He confirmed, “The picture is from the wedding of Prasidh Krishna and Rachna Krishna.”

Conclusion: Vishvas News investigation determined that the viral claim is false. The picture does not depict Nirmala Sitharaman’s daughter but rather captures the marriage ceremony of the renowned Indian cricketer Prasidh Krishna. In the image, Rachna, the wife of Krishna, is seated on her father’s lap.
