Fact Check: Old Video Going Viral With Misleading Claims

In Vishvas News’ investigation, the viral post was found to be misleading

New Delhi Vishvas News – A video is going viral across various social media platforms, showing people throwing BJP flags on the ground. As this video circulates during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, it is claimed that polling trends have started to emerge from Punjab.

Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found it to be misleading. The viral video dates back to 2021 and captures an incident in Haryana where individuals protested against the BJP at the time. Some users are sharing this old video, originally from the Ellenabad by-election, falsely attributing it to Punjab and claiming it as recent.

What’s Going Viral?

Facebook user Ravindranath Thakur uploaded a video on April 10 and wrote, “I have heard that trends are coming from Punjab.” The content of the post is written here as it is.

Investigation:

Vishvas News started its investigation by employing the Google search tool to discern the truth behind the viral video. Google Open Search Tool was used to search related keywords. A video was found on the YouTube channel “Khas Haryana,” which depicted farmers in Ellenabad burning thousands of BJP flags. This video, uploaded on October 7, 2021, offered a different perspective on the incident.

Further investigation led to the discovery of the original video on a Facebook page named “Bebaak Awaaz.” Uploaded on the same date, October 7, 2021, the accompanying description elucidated that during the Ellenabad Assembly by-election, farmers expressed their dissent by burning BJP flags.

In a news article published two years prior on Bhaskar.com, it was reported that INLD’s Abhay Chautala emerged victorious in the Ellenabad assembly seat by-election in Haryana. Chautala secured 65,798 votes, while the BJP candidate, Govind Kanda, trailed with 59,189 votes. Pawan Beniwal of the Congress party occupied the third position with 20,857 votes.

Continuing their investigation, Vishvas News reached out to Sanmeet Singh, the Sirsa District Incharge of Dainik Jagran, and shared the viral video with him. Singh confirmed that the viral video indeed originated in 2021 and documented a protest that occurred in Ellenabad, Haryana, at that time.

The Facebook account of Ravindranath Thakur was scrutinised and it was found that the person was a resident of Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
