New Delhi (Vishvas News). Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has filed her nomination for the by-election in the Wayanad constituency of Kerala. A video claiming to showcase her rally is going viral on social media. In this footage, many people can be seen waving Congress flags alongside many waving green flags. Some users are claiming that Pakistani flags were waved at Priyanka Gandhi’s rally in Wayanad.
Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that the viral video is about five years old and is from Kasargad in Kerala. The green flags depicted in the video belong to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), not Pakistan. Both IUML and Congress flags were waved at Priyanka Gandhi’s nomination rally in Wayanad.
What is the viral post?
Instagram user Pushpendraa Kulshrestha shared a reel (archive link) with the caption,
“This is not Pakistan where Pakistani flags are being waved, this is Wayanad in Kerala, India, where Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi is contesting the elections. Hindus should be aware of the Congress mentality.”
Investigation
To verify the authenticity of the viral claim, we took a screenshot of the video and searched it with Google Lens. We found this video (archive link) on the X account of user Raju Das, uploaded on May 8, 2024. The video was labelled as footage from Rahul Gandhi’s rally in the Lok Sabha elections and also claimed that Pakistani flags were waved at the Wayanad rally.
This indicates that the video is not from Priyanka Gandhi’s Wayanad rally. We also noticed the signs of Aramana Silks and Vivo in the video.
Upon searching for these locations on Google, it was confirmed that they are situated in Kasargad, Kerala.
Additionally, we found this video uploaded on the ‘Entertainment In Malayalam’ YouTube channel on June 10, 2019. This means the video has been available online for about five years.
For further clarity, we reached out to Kerala Congress Vice President VT Balaram and shared the video with him. He confirmed, “This video is from Kasargad in Kerala during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In the video, slogans were raised against CPM candidate Satish Chandran. The green flags in the video belong to the IUML, a well-known political party in Kerala with two MPs and two MLAs in Kasargad.”
We also compared the green flag in the video to the flag of Pakistan, noting that the green flag lacks the white stripes present on the flag of Pakistan.
Finally, we reviewed a live video of Priyanka Gandhi’s rally in Wayanad, available on the Facebook page of Kerala Congress, which prominently featured flags of both IUML and Congress.
A report published on NDTV’s website on October 23 2024 stated that Priyanka Gandhi kicked off her election campaign with a roadshow in Kalpetta and filed her nomination for the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election. The event featured flags of Congress and its ally, the IUML. Voting in Wayanad is scheduled for November 13, 2024.
Reporter Live’s reporter Deepak in Wayanad, confirmed that no Pakistani flags were waved during Priyanka Gandhi’s rally. The green flags seen in the rally belong to Congress’s ally, the IUML.
Lastly, we scanned the profile of the Instagram user who shared the old video with misleading claims. The user has more than 85000 followers.
Conclusion: Priyanka Gandhi has filed her nomination for the Wayanad Lok Sabha by-election, where flags of Congress and its ally, the IUML, were waved during the rally. The viral video in question has been on the internet for about five years and the green flags in the video belong to IUML. Therefore, the claim that these flags are Pakistani is false.
