New Delhi (Vishvas News). An old picture of senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor is going viral on social media. It is being claimed about this picture that it is from Congress’ ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra. In the picture, Shashi Tharoor can be seen sitting with some women. This claim turned out to be false in the investigation of Vishvas team. The picture is actually from Germany when Shashi Tharoor gave a lecture at a gathering in 2019.

What’s in the viral post

Fake post related to Shashi Tharoor is going viral from Facebook to Twitter. Uploading an old picture of Shashi Tharoor, a Facebook user named Aditya Pandey (archive link) wrote: “The first picture from Kerala in Bharat Jodo Yatra is posted by Guru Shashi Tharoor ji.”

A Facebook user named Asad Ansari (archive link) also shared this picture with the wrong claim, writing “First picture from Kerala in bharat Jodo Yatra.. We have youth icon “Shashi-Tharoor” ji. Guruji is busy as always.!!”

A Twitter user named ‘Jayesh Tiwari Bhayana‘ (archive link) also shared the viral image with a false claim.

A Twitter user named ‘The Hindu Rajesh Parihar‘ (archive link) also shared the viral image with a false claim.

Investigation

Vishvas team first did a Google reverse image search of the viral image. We found this picture uploaded on Shashi Tharoor’s Facebook account on 22 August 2019. The description written with the post read “My annual lecture at the Bucerius Summer School on Global Governance this year was on a pet theme, “multi-alignment in a networked world”. It’s always a pleasure to interact with some of the brightest young minds from around the world on issues of global governance, as I have done since 2001.(pix ©Zeit-Stiftung)”

We also found a tweet from Shashi Tharoor on 22 August 2019 regarding this event in which this picture was also used. Along with it was written “My annual lecture at the @BSSZEITStiftung this year was on a pet theme, “multi-alignment in a networked world”. It’s always a pleasure to interact w/some of the brightest young minds from around the world on issues of global governance, as I’ve done since 2001.(pix ©Zeit-Stiftung)”

Buserius Summer School is an annual 11-day summer seminar that takes place in Germany and is one of the longest-running and most successful programs of ZEIT-Stiftung (ZEIT-Stiftung is one of the most active private foundations in Germany).

We contacted Congress leader Pranav Jha in this regard. He said “It’s evidentially clear that this photo was tweeted by Shri Tharoor himself where he mentions that it’s an event organised in Hamburg which he has been attending since 2001. The participants gather to brainstorm on issues ranging from research and scholarship, arts and culture to education and training. It’s unfortunate that an initiative like “Bharat Jodo Yatra” by opposition leaders to unite the country today is being unnecessarily misrepresented and vilified..”

What is India Jodo Yatra?

The long journey from Kanyakumari to Kashmir will be covered in 150 days in the Bharat Jodo Yatra of the Congress which started on 7th September. Bharat Jodo is a mass movement to create awareness among the people and strengthen the Congress party before the 2024 general elections. There will also be marches, rallies and public meetings during this Bharat Jodo Yatra, in which senior Congress leaders will participate. More information about this yatra can be read in these news reports.

In the end, Vishvas team did a social scanning of a Facebook user named Aditya Pandey, who made the fake post viral. This user has about 5000 Facebook friends.

Conclusion: This claim turned out to be misleading in the investigation of Vishvas news. The picture is actually from Germany when Shashi Tharoor gave a lecture at a gathering in 2019.
