Fact Check : Digitally altered railway signboard of Kanyakumari viral with wrong claim

Vishvas News (New Delhi). A picture of Tamil Nadu railway station is viral on social media with the claim that the ‘Go Back Modi’ slogan was written on a board at the railway station to protest PM Modi’s visit to Chennai. Vishvas News in its investigation found that this claim is false. The viral picture is edited, no such slogan has been written on the railway station of Tamil Nadu. The image shared on social media is digitally altered.

What’s In The Viral Post?

A Twitter user (archive link) named Sudhakar Suganya shared this post. The caption reads, “When #GoBackModi trends, we can know by default it is for Modi’s TN visit. TN people never shy away from expressing their emotions #GoBack_Modi.”

Investigation –

We searched the photo through Google reverse image to verify the authenticity of the picture. We found the original image in Business Insider’s article. It was published on March 17, 2017. In the report, author Ed Hanley shares his 85-hour travel experience from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari. This image was ditto similar to the viral image, but the text written on the board was different. The text here read: Kanyakumari in Tamil, Hindi and English. The similarity between both the images can be seen in the collage below.

We started searching on Google about Ed Hanley. We found Ed Hanley’s official YouTube channel. After scanning the channel we found the video of Ed Hanley’s visit to India uploaded on 3rd March 2016. It carried the viral photo’s original version at 1:41 timestamp. Here also, the text on the board read Kanyakumari in three languages, i.e. Tamil, Hindi and English.

For more details, we contacted Dhananjayan, CPRO, Southern Railway Zone. Vishvas news shared the viral picture with him. He told us, “The viral claim is false. The picture is edited and shared with a false claim.

This picture was shared by a Twitter user named Sudhakar Suganya with the wrong claim. According to the profile, the user has 514 followers. She is active on Twitter since April 2021.

Conclusion: Vishvas News in its investigation found that this claim is false. The viral picture is edited. The image shared on social media is digitally altered.
