Fact Check: Arvind Kejriwal’s Speech on ‘One Nation One Election’ Is A Year Old, Not Recent

A video of former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal criticising the  ‘One Nation One Election’ initiative is going viral on social media after the Union Cabinet accepted the Kovind Committee’s recommendations on it. Some users are sharing this video, claiming it to be recent.

Vishvas News’ investigation revealed that this video is about a year old and dates back to the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, where Kejriwal, during a rally in Rewa, spoke about advocating for ‘One Nation One Education’ and ‘One Nation One Treatment’ initiatives instead of the ‘One Nation One Election’.

What is the viral post?

Facebook user Farid Warsi shared a 3:33 minute video on September 19, 2024 (archive link), with the caption, “Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched a scathing attack on One Nation One Election. Listen to what he said”

In the video, Kejriwal is seen criticising the ‘One Nation One Election’ initiative, rejecting its concept and targeting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for this. He emphasises the need for ‘One Nation One Education’ and ‘One Nation One Treatment’ instead.

This video was also shared (archive link) on the official  X handle of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on September 19, 2024.

Investigation

To verify the viral claim, we extracted a keyframe from the video and searched it using Google Lens. The key frame appears in a news article published on India Today’s website on October 2, 2023, that covers Kejriwal’s statement regarding the arrest of Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira.

A longer version of the viral video can be seen in the news published on Quint Hindi’s website on September 18, 2023. The article states, “AAP convenor and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal held an election rally in Rewa ahead of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections 2023. During this, he appealed to the public to reject the ‘One Nation One Election’ initiative.”

Naiduniya’s Rewa reporter, Nilambuj Pandey confirmed that this video is about a year old. During the assembly elections, Arvind Kejriwal held a rally in Rewa, where he criticised the ‘One Nation One Election’ initiative.

According to a news article published on Aaj Tak’s website on September 18, 2024 the Union Cabinet has approved the ‘One Country One Election’ proposal that may be presented in the Parliament in the winter session.

On September 17, 2024 AAP’s official X handle posted that Arvind Kejriwal had resigned from his position as Chief Minister of Delhi, submitting his resignation to Delhi LG Vinay Saxena.

We scanned the Facebook profile of the user who shared the old video, believing it to be recent. The user resides in Balrampur and has around 5800 followers.
