Fact Check: Old Video from Gorakhpur CAA Protest Falsely Linked To Sambhal Violence

Vishvas News’ investigation found this claim to be misleading. The viral video is of the protest against CAA and NRC  in Gorakhpur in 2019-20. It has no connection with the violence that broke out in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh over the survey of Jama Masjid.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A video is circulating on social media, claiming to show alleged police action during the violence that erupted in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday (Nov 24, 2024), during the survey of Jama Masjid after a court order. The footage shows clashes between the police and the public.

In its investigation, Vishvas News found this claim to be misleading. The viral video is related to the protest against CAA and NRC in Gorakhpur during 2019-20. It has no connection with the recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, concerning the survey of Jama Masjid.

What is viral?

On November 24, 2024, Facebook user Rahul Goyal shared the viral video clip with the caption, “For instant relief from chronic back pain, waist pain, leg pain… come to the Jama Masjid protest rally in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh… World famous doctor… Yogi Adityanath”

Investigation

Upon searching the keyframes of the viral video using Google Lens, we found that the same footage was uploaded on a YouTube channel called ‘Social Media News’ on December 31, 2019. The video was titled, “Indian Police Beat Anti-Citizenship Law Protester. CAA – NRC – CAA_NRC – India – CAAProtest _CAA.”

We discovered that several users had uploaded this video on Facebook in January 2020.

This confirmed that the video is not recent, however, tracing its true origin remained essential.

The video, uploaded in 2019-2020, was tagged with keywords like CAA and NRC. To trace its origin, we searched for violent protests related to CAA and NRC during that time. Our search led us to several YouTube channels, featuring clips closely resembling the viral footage. The descriptions of these videos indicated that the footage was from Gorakhpur.

To confirm, we searched for the names of the shops seen in the viral video on Google Maps. It confirmed that the viral video is from Nakhas Road, Gorakhpur.

We contacted Pradeep Srivastava, Dainik Jagran’s senior journalist in Gorakhpur, who confirmed that this video dates back to the 2019 CAA and NRC protests, and the place seen in the video is Nakhas Road, Gorakhpur.

The user Rahul Goyal who shared the viral video with the misleading claim has over 6000 Facebook followers.
