Fact Check: Image of Smriti Irani Holding a Fish Not Taken During Navratri

The claim that these images of Smriti Irani are from Navratri are misleading. Both the images were taken on April 6, 2024, before the commencement of Chaitra Navratri.

New Delhi (Vishvas News). A collage of two pictures of Union Minister and MP Smriti Irani is going viral on social media. In one picture she can be seen holding a fish, while in the other she is holding a picture of Goddess Durga. Some people are sharing this picture on various social media platforms, claiming it to be taken during Navratri.

Vishvas News investigated the viral post and found the claim to be misleading. The viral picture dates back to April 6, 2024, prior to Navratri when Smriti Irani campaigned for the BJP candidate in North Chennai. It’s worth noting that Chaitra Navratri commenced on April 9 this year and will conclude on April 17.

What’s Going Viral?

Facebook user Harjeet Singh Johar shared this picture on April 15, 2024, questioning the juxtaposition of a fish and a photo of Goddess Durga in the same frame during Navratri.

Investigation:

Vishvas News conducted a thorough investigation of each image one by one.

First Picture:

While conducting a Google Reverse Image search, we found the image of Smriti Irani holding a fish on the Hindustan Times’ Instagram page. The post mentioned that it was taken during an election campaign rally in Chennai North constituency on April 6, 2024.

News websites, such as the Times of India, also reported this event on April 6, 2024, where fishermen gifted a large fish to Smriti Irani as a gift.

Second Picture:

The image of Smriti Irani holding the photo of Durga Maa was found in a tweet on her verified Twitter account on April 6, 2024, describing her campaigning in North Chennai and Tiruvallur.

Since Navratri commenced on April 9, 2024 in India, it’s evident that both of these pictures were taken before Navratri.

To validate our findings, we reached out to Chennai-based journalist Prabhakaran Tamilarasu, who verified that both images were indeed taken in Tamil Nadu on April 6, 2024.

Vishvas News scanned the profile of the user Harjeet Singh Johar, who posted the photo with the misleading claim. He is a resident of Kanpur and has a following of over 400 people.

Conclusion: The claim that these images of Smriti Irani are from Navratri are misleading. Both the images were taken on April 6, 2024, before the commencement of Chaitra Navratri.
