Fact Check: Viral Claim About Shooter Rhythm Sangwan Breaking World Records In Baku Is Misleading

Vishvas News’ investigation found that the viral claim about Rhythm Sangwan breaking two world records during the ongoing Shooting World Cup in Baku is misleading. While she did achieve this feat in May 2023 during the ISSF World Cup, the news is not related to the ongoing shooting championship in Baku.

New Delhi (Vishvas News): A viral social media post is claiming that Indian shooter Rhythm Sangwan shattered two world records at the ongoing Shooting World Cup in Baku.

Vishvas News conducted an investigation and found that the claim is misleading. While Rhythm Sangwan did indeed break two world records during the Shooting World Cup also known as ISSF World Cup in Baku, this event did not occur recently. The news is of May 2023.

What is in the viral post

Facebook user ‘Jat Brothers’ shared Rhythm Sangwan’s picture on August 19 with the caption “India’s new shooting star our girl Rhythm Sangwan broke the world record at the ongoing ISSF Shooting World Cup in Baku! In the 25m air pistol event, she scored 595/600. Scored 299/300 in Rapid. Many many congratulations and best wishes.”

Investigation

To check the viral claim, Vishvas News used Google Open Search. We found multiple news articles about the claim, but all were dated May 2023. According to a news report published on the news website Jagran.com on May 13, 2023, “Rhythm Sangwan broke the 29-year-old world record in the Shooting World Cup. She secured first place in the qualification of the junior women’s 25-meter pistol event by amassing 595 points. Nevertheless, Rhythm missed out on a second medal at the ISSF World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.”

The Times of India website also published a report on May 13, 2023, which confirms that Rhythm Sangwan had broken Diana Iorgova’s 29-year-old record.

From our investigation so far, it became clear that the news in the viral claim was three months old. We investigated further to check whether Rhythm Sangwan had broken any world records recently. With a simple Google search, we found that the Shooting World Championship is ongoing in Baku, where the Indian women’s team secured a gold medal in the 25m pistol team event on August 20. This marked India’s third gold in the championship. The team included Rhythm Sangwan, Manu Bhaker, and Isha Singh. However, no news sources reported any recent world records being broken.

Vishvas News spoke to former Indian shooter and sports enthusiast Shimon Sharif who clarified that “the news pertained to the ISSF World Cup in May, during which Rhythm Sangwan scored 595 points. The ongoing competition is the ISSF World Championship, where she scored 583 points. Both events occurred in Baku, Azerbaijan. The claim is misleading”.

We scanned the profile of the Facebook page ‘Jat Brothers’. The page has a following of over 3,000 on Facebook.

Conclusion: Vishvas News’ investigation found that the viral claim about Rhythm Sangwan breaking two world records during the ongoing Shooting World Cup in Baku is misleading. While she did achieve this feat in May 2023 during the ISSF World Cup, the news is not related to the ongoing shooting championship in Baku.
