Fact Check: Phone Number Launched To Support BJP Viral With Misleading Claim About UCC

After conducting a thorough fact-check, Vishvas News concluded that the number ‘9090902024’ is associated with a BJP campaign aimed at garnering support for the Modi government’s nine years in power. It has no connection with the Uniform Civil Code as claimed in the viral post.

New Delhi (Vishvas News) – Amid the nationwide discussion about the Uniform Civil Code, a few social media users are sharing a phone number, claiming that by giving a missed call on the number you can register your support towards the Uniform Civil Code.

Vishvas News fact-checked the viral claim and found that the phone number ‘9090902024’ is linked to a BJP’s campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, where users can give a missed call to show support for the Modi government’s completion of nine years. Investigation revealed that this number has nothing to do with the Uniform Civil Code.

What’s going viral?

Facebook user ‘Yogi Supporters Group’ shared the viral post on June 27, 2023, and wrote, originally in Hindi, “If you can’t fill Uniform Civil Code (UCC) support form online then give a missed call on this number 9090902024 and show your unity Hindu brothers and sisters.”

Investigation

To check this claim, we searched on Google using relevant keywords. We found no news reports supporting the viral claim about Uniform Civil Code.

However, we found a notice dated June 14, 2023, issued by the Law Commission of India. The notice sought comments from the general public, political parties, and others regarding the Uniform Civil Code. The notice asked the interested people to write their views about the UCC in an email to the Law Commission of India at memberecretary-lci@gov.in. The notice did not mention the viral number or proposed the act of giving a missed call to a specific number as a means to show support for the UCC.

In the next step of our investigation, we decided to call the viral number. The call disconnected after a single ring. Subsequently, we received a message stating, originally in Hindi, “Thank you for supporting the Modi government’s commitment to service, good governance, and the welfare of the poor. Click on 9yearsofseva.bjp.org to know the achievements of 9 years of Modi government. BJP.”

This message led us to a tweet posted on the official BJP Twitter handle on June 29, 2023. The tweet appealed to people to give a missed call on the number 9090902024 to join the ‘Jan Sampark Se Jan Samarthan’ campaign.

Additionally, we found an article on the news portal of NDTV dated June 30, which confirmed that the BJP had launched this number as part of their largest mass-connect program to mark their nine years in power.

For more details, we reached out to BJP spokesperson Vijay Sonkar Shastri, who confirmed that the viral number was indeed launched to support the BJP.

In the end, when we scanned the profile of the Facebook group ‘Yogi Supporters Group’, which shared the fake post, we noted that the group had nearly 8000 followers.

Conclusion: After conducting a thorough fact-check, Vishvas News concluded that the number ‘9090902024’ is associated with a BJP campaign aimed at garnering support for the Modi government’s nine years in power. It has no connection with the Uniform Civil Code as claimed in the viral post.
