Fact Check: Old Video Of 2021 Jamnagar Flood Shared As Visuals From Cyclone Biparjoy

While it is a fact that Cyclone Biparjoy caused havoc in Gujarat, the viral video of Jamnagar is not related to it. The video is from September 2021, when floods led to a dire situation in some districts. Vishvas News’ investigation found the viral post to be misleading.

New Delhi Vishvas News – Several fake and misleading posts continue to emerge on social media days after Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat on June 15. Amid these false claims, an old video has been shared as visuals from Cyclone Biparjoy in Jamnagar. In this video, several houses are shown submerged in the flood. A man and woman can also be heard in the video describing the situation.

Vishvas News fact-checked this post and found the claim to be misleading. The investigation revealed that the video was from September 2021, when Jamnagar witnessed massive floods after incessant rain.

Facebook user Vinod Sharma posted a video on June 15, claiming, “Biparjoy cyclone impact Ghudsia village…Jamnagar..Gujarat.”

Investigation

Vishvas News used various online tools to gather information about the viral video. Apart from Invid, Google Reverse Image, Google Open Search Tool was also included in this. We first used the Invid tool to extract keyframes of the video. After this, the keyframes were uploaded to Google reverse search image tool to find the original video. The search led to a video on YouTube, uploaded on a channel on September 13, 2021. The video description, written in Gujarati, said a disaster-like situation has arisen in Aliabada, Jambuda, Balchadi, Bigi Banugar, Sapda, Pasaya Berja subdivisions of Jamnagar due to incessant rains. The Google translation tool was used to translate the video description.

Vishvas News further began gathering information about the September 2021 floods through Google open search tool. News related to this was found on many websites. In a news article published on the website of Hindustan Times on September 14, it said that thousands of people were affected in Rajkot and Jamnagar due to heavy rains. Read the full news here.

Following up on the investigation, Vishvas News contacted Jeevan Kapuria, Associate Editor of Gujarati Jagran, and shared the viral video with him. He said that many old videos were going viral in the name of Biparjoy, and this video was one of them.

At the end of the investigation, the account of Facebook user Vinod Sharma was scanned. The user, who lives in Ahmedabad, has more than 6,000 followers.
