New Delhi (Vishvas News) – A video circulating on social media shows an SUV drifting off a waterlogged road and plunging into a ditch, with posts claiming that the video is from Dandeli, Karnataka. Some users are also associating this video with cyclone Biparjoy. However, Vishvas News found the claims to be false. The viral video is not from India, but from the Central American country of Nicaragua.

What’s in the viral post?

A Facebook user named ‘S Jana’ shared the viral video with the caption, “This is Dandeli Karnataka near Hubli Dharwad. Sometimes overconfidence has to pay a heavy price.” (Archived link)

Investigation:

To verify the viral video’s authenticity, we conducted a reverse image search using screengrabs from the video. The search led us to a YouTube verified channel called ‘100 Noticias Nicaragua’, a local news outlet, which uploaded this video on May 29, 2023. The video’s description says it captures an incident in Veracruz, a city in Nicaragua.

The video is also available on the channel’s website, on this link.

The caption there says, originally in Spanish: “The driver of a four-wheel drive truck died after being swept away by a strong current of water in the Managua River that divides  Veracruz and Las Jaguitas.”

Taking a cue from this, we conducted an advanced keyword search and found a news article on sott.net, a Nicaraguan news portal. According to the article published on May 29, 2023, the incident occurred in Veracruz, Nicaragua. This is the same date as that of the video on the channel, 100 Noticias Nicaragua.

We also came across subsequent reports stating that the person inside the vehicle drowned.

Further, Nirupama KS, a Karnataka-based senior associate editor at Asianet news portal, confirmed that the viral video is not from Karnataka.
